Old Police Headquarters
About the Business
Welcome to the Old Police Headquarters, a distinguished landmark nestled in the vibrant Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Located at 240 Centre Street, this iconic building stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural grandeur. Originally built between 1905 and 1909 by the renowned architectural firm Hoppin & Koen, it served as the headquarters for the New York City Police Department from 1909 until 1973.
This historic structure, known today as the Police Building Apartments, underwent a remarkable transformation in 1988, when it was converted into luxury co-op residences by the Ehrenkranz Group & Eckstut. The building's elegant design and storied past make it a sought-after address that seamlessly blends classic charm with modern living.
240 Centre Street replaced an older headquarters on Mulberry Street, where the esteemed Theodore Roosevelt once served as New York City Police Commissioner. Following the consolidation of the five boroughs into the City of Greater New York in 1898, the need for a new, expansive police headquarters became evident, leading to the creation of this architectural masterpiece.
Designated a New York City landmark in 1978 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, the Old Police Headquarters remains a cherished piece of New York's architectural and cultural heritage. Whether you're a resident or a visitor, this historic building offers a unique glimpse into the city's past while providing all the amenities of contemporary urban living. Come explore the legacy and luxury of 240 Centre Street, where history meets modern elegance.

"A gorgeous building close to SoHo and Little Italy area."
"The old police headquarters in Manhattan is a historic building located at 240 Centre Street, between Broome and Grand Streets in the Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan. The building was designed by architects Hoppin & Koen and built between 1905 and 1909 to serve as the headquarters for the New York City Police Department. It remained the department's headquarters until 1973, when it was sold and converted into luxury apartments. The building is known for its distinctive Beaux-Arts style architecture, which features classical columns, arched windows, and ornate detailing. The most prominent feature of the building is its copper-domed clock tower, which rises 297 feet above street level. For many years, the clock tower was used as a navigation landmark by ships sailing into New York harbor. Today, the former police headquarters building is a designated New York City landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building's apartments are highly sought after due to their historic character and prime location in the heart of Manhattan."
"Impressive architecture in lower Manhattan"
"Classic NYC History. Now apartments, cell blocks selling for 4M... ohh how things change"
"I used to walk by this building almost everyday, and never knew what it was until someone who grew up in the neighborhood told me. Amazing. A great character for the neighborhood. I painted a portrait of this place in my series of 'Disappearing New York', which you can see on my website, kovalfineart dot com."
