About the Business
Welcome to Woodland Cemetery
Located at 670 South 10th Street, Newark, New Jersey, Woodland Cemetery is a historic and serene final resting place, steeped in rich history and dedicated to honoring those who have passed. Established in 1855, originally known as the West Newark Cemetery, it became widely recognized as the German Cemetery due to the significant number of ethnic German burials. This heritage is still visible today in the many German-inscribed monuments that grace our grounds.
Spanning 36.5 acres and home to over 80,000 burials, Woodland Cemetery remains an active cemetery, proudly serving our community. In 2016, we expanded to include a new section of affordable graves and ash plots, making it more accessible to the surrounding areas.
Our cemetery is a testament to history, being one of the first rural or garden cemeteries in the region. The main entrance features a stunning brownstone Gothic Revival gatehouse, constructed between 1873 and 1881, inviting visitors to explore the past. We are honored to be the final resting place for over 600 war veterans, representing every major U.S. conflict from the War of 1812 to the Vietnam War, including more than 350 Civil War veterans.
Woodland Cemetery is overseen by a dedicated, non-compensated volunteer Board of Managers, all of whom have personal ties to those interred here. Their mission is to preserve and enhance this historic burial ground, promoting its history and ensuring its upkeep. Through fundraising efforts, they aim to maintain the cemetery's beauty, restore historic structures, and create an inviting, accessible space for all visitors.
We warmly welcome donations from those who wish to support our efforts. For more information on how you can make a difference, please visit our donation page. Thank you for your consideration and support in preserving the legacy of Woodland Cemetery.

"Visited the cemetery with volunteer caretaker and my spouse. He spoke to about history of the cemetery and escorted us to my great grandmother's and other relatives gravesite. We were able to take photos which meant so much to me. The volunteers have worked so hard at cleaning up the cemetery. They should be commended for their hard work and diligence. Battling nature can be a never-ending battle and these volunteers don't give up."
"I've been in contact with the volunteer team surrounding Mary Lish and her friends for about 3 years now....In 2019 I was looking for information of the burial sites of some of my ancestors...the team collected information for me, and even sent me photos of the graves of my relatives....I admire this work, and that includes the cleaning up of the cemetery, of the graves and gravestones also, as well as the digitization of the data on the old documents and tombstones....many gravesites are of course still in the devastated areas... but they are working on it....they are all volunteers, who don't get any money for it...by the way: every small donation helps.....some of the photos, I received, are attached....I am very grateful !!!....greetings from Germany :-)"
"My second great-grandmother was buried here in 1969. She passed of cancer. I ask that the owner of the cemetery have enough respect for the families of the deceased and the deceased in general to please repair and do yard work in there. It saddens me that when I drive by the cemetery it looks that way. I would love to one day visit her grave and leave flowers. It would mean the world to me to just at least visit her once. The picture I am posting with this review is from findagrave.com."
"It's known that the cemetery seemed to have gone through a long period of being abandoned, causing the lawn to be very overgrown. I'm a witness that Mr. Vincentz & his team have been doing a great job of cleaning up the property. I was able to visit the cemetery for the first time yesterday & put some flowers down for a relative. Her area was very nice & maintained. Afterwards I asked Mr. Vincentz if he could show me around the cemetery & teach me about its fascinating history. A huge percentage of the property has been cut & looks great! He showed me the remaining areas that need work & the schedule for all of it. Not only did I enjoy my visit, but I felt safe & I really appreciated his kindness & friendly customer service. I can't wait to see how this place looks within the next few months!"
