Reviews of Worth Square
"Worth Square, also known as General Worth Square, is a hidden gem in the heart of Manhattan, nestled between Broadway and Fifth Avenue, at East 25th Street. This charming public square, located just west of Madison Square Park, holds a rich history and a tranquil atmosphere that offers a delightful respite from the bustling city. Originally named in honor of General William J. Worth, a hero of the Mexican-American War, the square has evolved over the years while preserving its historical significance. One of its notable features is the striking monument dedicated to General Worth, which stands as a testament to his service and bravery. Worth Square serves as a picturesque oasis in a thriving urban landscape, providing benches and greenery for those seeking a peaceful moment amidst the city's hustle and bustle. It's a fantastic spot for people-watching, enjoying a leisurely lunch, or simply taking in the serene surroundings."
"It's pleasant stop to set across from Madison Square park. To see the scenery"
"So sad. Most of the reviewers, and certainly the majority of visitors to Worth Square, do not even glance at who it was put here to honor. And that is a shame because William Jenkins Worth was a fascinating character. Raised as a Quaker, he served a nearly lifelong career in the US Army during its early years beginning with the War of 1812. I knew of him because I am a born-and-raised Floridian and Worth fought in the 2nd Seminole War, which took place there. He also commanded troops and fought battles during the war with Mexico in the 1840s. Amazing his longevity in the service. So take a moment to look at the monument and note the names of all those different battles he fought in and you will see them stretch from the Northeast to Florida to modern day Texas and Old Mexico."
"Great little area for food trucks and snapping pics of the popular Flatiron building, as well as exceptional surrounding shopping. Also, I learned a notable tidbit from another reviewer: “one of two monuments in the New York City that is both a memorial and a mausoleum--General Worth is buried here. The other monument and mausoleum is Grant's Tomb.”"
