Discover the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing at The Met
Located at 1000 5th Avenue, Manhattan, New York, the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing is a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and cultural explorers. As part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this wing houses an extraordinary collection of over eleven thousand works of art from the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa, the Pacific Islands, and North, Central, and South America. Spanning from 3000 B.C.E. to the present, these diverse artworks include decorative and ceremonial objects from Nigeria's Court of Benin, sculptures from West and Central Africa, and captivating images of deities and spirits from New Guinea and beyond. Additionally, explore objects crafted from gold, ceramic, and stone from ancient American cultures.
Please note that upon arrival, visitors must join the virtual exhibition queue. Due to capacity limits, the queue may close early if it reaches its daily limit.
Established in 1969 thanks to the generous gift of Nelson A. Rockefeller, the department includes a specialized library and the Visual Resource Archive. The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, opened in 1982, showcases these collections and honors Nelson Rockefeller's son, Michael, a passionate collector of Asmat objects from Papua Province, Indonesia.
As part of an ongoing evolution, The Met is creating three distinct new galleries dedicated to Sub-Saharan African Art, Ancient American Art, and Oceanic Art. Learn more about this exciting renovation and explore The Met's extensive publications, richly illustrated essays, and engaging videos that offer fresh perspectives on these captivating regions.
