"An absolute gem of a museum, I live in the neighborhood and visit frequently. I call it a snack size museum, as it has a single exhibit that you can usually go through leisurely in less than an hour. It’s pay what you want. Don’t let the word folk fool you, it’s not full of weathervanes and quilts. Although they have had both of those exhibits! It’s truly surprising some of the things you will see, like art done by prisoners and many exhibits that center American history. They also have a great gift store with hard to find items, which is worth a visit on its own. I highly recommend checking out this museum, located right near Lincoln Center."
"One of my favorite museums to visit in NYC. Free entry. Interesting exhibitions on art and mental health. The exhibitions change every few months and often center women artists and other artists neglected by the main stream institutions. Don't miss the embroidered textiles, pants, and bloomers."
"Always a pleasure to visit . It’s free and has a wonderful gift shop with lots of unique gifts . Staff is friendly and you can even take part in complimentary curator tours - which are very informative . Never crowded and easy to navigate ."
"Small but cool and free museum devoted to American folk art from traditional to contemporary, established in 1961. Well curated exhibition."
"Expectations to see the paintings from permanent collection appeared to be naive. Given space constraints, current visiting exhibition occupies most of the museum. Today it happened to be French artists from psychiatric asylums from mid last century Art Brut. Now, that still beats “modern” art museums, just seems far from American folk art. However, museum is free and restrooms are decent."
