As one of the many preserved rock outcrops designed by the renowned landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, Hernshead is named after the British word for heron, inspired by the rock's resemblance to the bird's head. The area surrounding Hernshead bursts into color each spring, with vibrant blooms of azaleas, Virginia bluebells, Dutchman’s breeches, and daffodils, creating a lush and inviting landscape.
Atop the rock outcrop stands the elegant Ladies Pavilion, a charming cast-iron structure offering shaded seating where visitors can relax and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings. Close by, the Hernshead Boat Landing provides another perfect spot to rest and soak in the views of one of the Lake's most scenic areas.

"It provides expansive views of the Ramble, the Lake, and the City’s skyline to the south. The surrounding landscape is planted with many spring blooming flowers, including azaleas, Virginia bluebells, Dutchman’s breeches, and daffodils. One of many existing rock outcrops preserved as part of the design of the Park, the Park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux chose to name this one “Hernshead,” using a British word for heron, because the shape of the rock reminded them of the bird’s head. "What an amazing view of candid water and the beautiful skyscrapers of midtown. Too crowded for the summertime but it's worth sticking around for a perfect picture. Sunny days are more likely to have a clear sky to brighten the portraits of the city. So don't forget to visit"
