Reviews of Neue Galerie New York
"My husband and I went the first week of the month were after 5pm, you can wait in line and attain free admission. They are very strict about bringing water and food inside. You get complimentary coat check in. It’s also quite beautiful Klimt paintings. I would highly come again."
"Being of Austrian descent, a graduate of The High School of Art and Design and The Fashion Institute of Technology, I really wanted to experience and enjoy this museum. Unfortunately it was a less than stellar experience. Firstly, ticket prices are extremely high. My sister is a senior and admission for seniors is $18 and $28 for the rest of us.. I think that is a bit much given the following. When one walks up to the door one will find it locked. A guard/door attendant opens the door and asks you gruffly to stand behind a line to the side of the entrance. Then once you are given permission to enter, you are escorted to a bag search and through a metal detector. It all feels less like a visit to a museum and more like an encounter with TSA. I realize they wish to keep the collection safe but treating paying visitors like criminals is inappropriate. My sister was asked to check her canvas bag after it was searched. It held tissues and makeup. Seeing Klimt’s Woman in Gold in person is a pretty cool experience and one naturally wants to take a photo (without a flash of course! However as soon as I lifted my phone to take a photo a guard emerged from behind a pillar to tell me no photos are allowed , even without a flash. I was told there is a reproduction of the Woman in Gold downstairs which I may photograph. Isn’t that special? In terms of the art displayed the Woman in Gold was the only painting worth seeing. We did enjoy the cafe but again it was overpriced even for the upper east side. $16 for 2 crepes, $15 for a 2” pastry that was mediocre. Crepes were nice but sadly not worth the price."
"Thrilled to see Klimt master piece which was the centre of the gallery. Not sure why pictures cannot be taken and many security guards in the gallery rooms."
"A good sign of a failed culture is one which tells its children that The Arts are for adults only. The Neue Gallery had to go out of its way to apply for a special license from the city to disallow children in the museum, which they claim on the website is due to none of the paintings using "special protections" such as glass covers. This is a lie: every single Klimt painting at the recent special exhibit is protected. Besides, you'd think the myriad security guards that dominate the museum would provide adequate protection--I counted 9 guards across only 6 rooms--but their real function is to run urgently across the room in the event someone takes a photo of something like the exhibit text on the walls (which I witnessed twice), or (gasp) a painting. For the budding photographers among you, this moment provides the best opportunity to take your own photographs, as the security guards do not run backwards when pursuing their suspects and cannot otherwise see behind them. Shoot away. There was a special irony in viewing the myriad prints Klimt worked painstakingly for 6 years to develop, only to have them not sell and never get the reclusive artist the recognition he deserved; and the creation of such unnecessary rules designed to limit the audience of this collection as much as possible. My son--autistic, like Mr. Klimt--would have loved to view the paintings of one of his favorite artists. The beneficent Mr. and Mrs. Lauder would not permit that today."
"The museum was awesome after watching the movie "Woman in Gold". We visited on a wet windy day, and there was a line. There is a line for the museum and the cafe upstairs. But the cafe downstairs doesn't have that wait or line, but it's small and tight down there. But it serves the same menu as the one upstairs. The food is authentic and good. It's hard finding good German/Austrian food in America, but this is the spot."
