About Us

Welcome to the North Woods, a hidden gem nestled in the northwest corner of Central Park at 296 Central Park North, Manhattan, New York. Spanning 40 acres, the North Woods is the largest of Central Park’s three woodland landscapes, offering a serene escape from the bustling city. Inspired by the majestic forests of the Catskills and Adirondacks, this tranquil haven was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux to provide New Yorkers with a taste of wilderness right in their backyard.
Explore a variety of landscapes and experiences, including the historic Blockhouse, a fortification from the War of 1812, and the enchanting Ravine. The North Woods is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, with over 210 bird species making an appearance throughout the year. Wander along rustic paths, discover cascading waterfalls, and cross charming bridges, all while soaking in the beauty of this urban oasis.
As you plan your visit, please note that paths near the future Harlem Meer Center are temporarily closed due to the construction of a new pool and rink. However, two lanes along the Park Drive remain open, with detour signage in place to guide you.
The ongoing care and maintenance of the North Woods are made possible by the Central Park Conservancy, which has undertaken significant restoration projects to preserve these landscapes. Your support through donations, membership, and volunteering helps keep Central Park a thriving public treasure for future generations.
Experience the peaceful, wild woodland that remains little-known to most visitors and transport yourself to the wilderness of the Adirondacks without leaving the city. Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or simply seeking a moment of tranquility, the North Woods offers a unique and immersive experience in the heart of Manhattan.

"Great for bird watching! I was able to catch a glimpse of a few species that I love to see. As usual, I had to stay in one spot and wait, but then it was great. I also saw an uncommon bird, the great crested flycatcher after another birder told me about it."
"The recent alterations to the park exemplify the negative consequences of excessive human intervention in natural spaces. Actions taken by certain nonprofit and conservation groups have significantly disrupted the park’s inherent essence. For example, the construction of numerous pathways has resulted in a loss of privacy for both visitors and wildlife. These pathways are visible throughout the park, eliminating any secluded areas that previously offered solace and a connection to nature. This has led to a noticeable decrease in wildlife activity, as animals are continually disturbed by the constant human presence. While the intention behind these changes may have been to improve accessibility and aesthetics, the outcome has been a stark departure from the park’s original, untouched beauty. For individuals who seek inspiration and rejuvenation from natural environments, visiting this park may now prove to be a disappointment. It is essential for organizations involved in such projects to strike a balance between accessibility and conservation. Unfortunately, in this case, the modifications have prioritized aesthetics over the park's natural essence. Moving forward, these groups should reflect on the impact of their actions and strive to preserve the intrinsic value of such natural spaces."
