"This area was originally envisioned as part of an arboretum that was never built. But it has always been a place of magnificent trees, including some of Central Park’s prized American elms. The East Meadow is one of the Park’s three major meadows—expansive open spaces that were intended to evoke the countryside and provide a respite from the confined conditions of urban life. In 2010, the Central Park Conservancy restored the meadow and installed three clay-surfaced areas that allow for more active play in concentrated areas."
"spacious area of central park, many nice available spots to do picnics. the grass is short and cut regularly and well."
"One of my favorite places in NYC. You can see many beautiful things here and it is usually quite."
"Same review for Central Park. This is by the 97th street and 5th ave entrance. Love this area of the park. Great for dogs and picnics."
"A slightly less well for wear cousin to Sheep's Meadow. Fenced in, which is nice for keeping tabs on your kids. The grass is in decent shape but there are plenty of bare patches. There are a few rocks for your toddler explorer. A bit overrun with parties and gatherings thrown together with tables and chairs (most without the requisite permit, it would seem). There is a nearby playground with a single bathroom that was in terrible shape when we visited. This is an OK option if you are nearby but it is worth your while to venture to other parts of the Park."
