Your involvement is crucial in maintaining the library as a vibrant and vital cultural and civic center for everyone. Our story began in the 1890s when Mrs. Gelston of Shore Road donated a collection of books to establish the Fort Hamilton Free Library. In 1901, it became a branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, and in 1905, it was relocated to its current historic building, one of Brooklyn's first Carnegie libraries. Designed by architects Lord and Hewlett, our simple yet elegant brick building features a limestone trim, a hipped roof with overhanging eaves, and windows strategically placed high on the facade.
Join us in celebrating over a century of community service and explore the diverse offerings at the Fort Hamilton Branch. Whether you're here to read, research, or engage with the community, we are dedicated to supporting your journey.

Reviews of Brooklyn Public Library - Fort Hamilton Branch
"A great place to read, study, use the computer, look up information, learn about community events and even make copies if you need them. A great valuable place to reflect on things too!"
"I've never seen a noisier library in my life. Library staff are talking loudly. If you are going to study, definitely bring headphones with you. There are also young adults who come to the library and play games loudly. Unfortunately, the staff cannot ensure order in this regard."
"I love the Fort Hamilton Branch of the Brooklyn Library. Friendly staff, clean restroom and the Bay Ridge neighborhood has many small shops and restaurants to visit. After your visit to the library, take a walk towards the Verrazano- Narrows Bridge and take in the gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean"
"Terrific library and helpful staff that assists if a patron needs to use the computer system or locate a hard to find book. Had to subtract a star due to the rambunctious kids that arrive after the schools let out at 3pm. Definitely don't use this library after 3!"
