"There’s almost nothing left of what was to be an ambitious 4500 foot tunnel through First Mountain (the first Watchung Hill). In 1869 the Caldwell Railroad was chartered and a tunnel was planned to link Montclair with Caldwell. The cut still remains and the portal was just before reaching Upper Mountain Ave. The project was abandoned in 1873. The tunnel was never finished. According to a 1903 article in the Hackensack Record, 500 feet of the tunnel had been completed from the Montclair side and they were considering completing the tunnel at that time. Curious to know if only the portal is caved in and if any of the tunnel survives underground. 400 feet had been completed on the Verona side, though the exact location of that portal is currently not known. A 1906 map of Montclair identifies the railroad right of way. The tunnel portal was actually just north of Upper Mountain Ave and Upper Mountain had a bridge across the rail line."
