About the St Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Cathedral
Welcome to St. Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Cathedral, a vibrant and welcoming community located at 112 1st Street, Passaic, New Jersey. As the Cathedral Church of Bishop Kurt Burnette for the Eparchy of Passaic, we are proud to serve as a spiritual home for Byzantine Catholics in full communion with the universal Catholic Church.
At St. Michael's, we offer a rich tapestry of liturgical and community activities that celebrate our faith and heritage. Our schedule includes regular services and sacraments, such as Baptism, Chrismation, and the Holy Eucharist, which are administered together as the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. We believe in nurturing our members from an early age, ensuring that infants and children are integrated into the faith through regular reception of Holy Communion.
Confession, or the Sacrament of Repentance, is available weekly, with additional hours during special liturgical seasons like Christmas and Pascha. Our community practices the Byzantine Catholic tradition of funeral services, offering both Parastas and Funeral Liturgies.
Our parish is deeply committed to fostering a sense of community through various events and activities. From egg hunts for children to St. Nicholas' visits, we create an environment where families can grow in faith together. Our kitchen is a hub of activity, supported by dedicated volunteers who prepare delicious meals for our gatherings, including our popular pirohy-making sessions.
St. Michael's Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a center for cultural and educational exchanges. We host events such as the Lenten devotion with neighboring Eastern Christian communities and welcome guests like the Franciscan Friars for discussions on Byzantine liturgy.
Accessibility is a priority for us, and our recently completed renovations have made our 121-year-old edifice fully accessible to all, including those with disabilities or mobility challenges.
We invite you to join us for our services, community events, and to experience the warmth and hospitality of St. Michael's. Whether you are a lifelong member or a first-time visitor, you will find a welcoming home here. For more information, visit our website or follow us on Facebook.
Come and see the beauty of our faith and the strength of our community at St. Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Cathedral.

Reviews of St Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Cathedral
"Fr. Jack Custer of St Michael The Archangel found my great-grandmother’s baptismal record which has been very difficult for me to find. Fr. Custer also very graciously sent me a sincere and informative letter explaining details of my family which neither I nor any of my living relatives ever knew. In the letter, Fr. Jack let me know the exact village my great-great-grandparents were from in modern-day Poland. He also explained the unique spellings used for my great-grandmother and her parents’ names in the baptismal record. The spellings were very different from the English form, and the names were written in a combination of Latin, Polish, Russian and Hungarian. I am very glad my great-grandmother was parishioner here and couldn’t be happier with all that the church has done to help me understand my family history."
"Was closed around 12noon on Sunday. It says they have service 9am."
"We have been coming to St. Michael's for many years. It is like no other church I have ever attended. The Divine Liturgy is beautiful and both the cathedral and chapel have breathtaking iconography. Our friends and family come every year for the annual Slavic festival. The food is homemade and fantastic. We have made many great friends here. We love St. Michael's."
"I have attended St. Michael's for the past 10 years. It is a small parish, but it feels like family. I came here from the Roman Catholic Church, and loved St. Mike's so much, that I actually changed rites officially and became Byzantine Catholic. My faith has greatly deepened since coming here. Even though I have taken graduate courses in Theology, I always learn something from Fr. Jack's homilies. I highly recommend St. Mikes!"
"My childhood church; many fond memories. Going to Easter mass tomorrow. Have to get the basket blessed!"
