South Shore Riverfront Park and Trail
Location: Pittsburgh, PA 15203, United States
Type: Park, Tourist Attraction
Nestled just feet from the bustling South Side Works, South Shore Riverfront Park showcases the natural beauty of Pittsburgh's Monongahela River. This scenic park is a gem in the city, featuring segments of the renowned Three Rivers Heritage Trail. This trail, which stretches along the banks of all three rivers throughout Allegheny County, offers a delightful journey through history and ecology, providing informative displays about significant historical events and river ecosystems.
Once a steel mill barge dock, the park has been transformed into one of Pittsburgh’s finest riverfront properties. The design includes switchback terraces that connect upper and lower plazas, creating dynamic outdoor public spaces perfect for recreation, relaxation, and special events.
Owned by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the City of Pittsburgh’s economic development agency, South Shore Riverfront Park is managed by the Soffer Organization. The park is part of the larger Three Rivers Heritage Trail system, Pittsburgh's signature trail network. This 33-mile trail is maintained by the Department of Public Works in collaboration with the Friends of the Riverfront. It is a popular destination for walking, biking, running, and sightseeing, and it forms a segment of the Great Allegheny Passage, a 150-mile corridor that links Pittsburgh to Washington, DC.
The trail provides connections to numerous Pittsburgh neighborhoods, attractions, and destinations along the riverfront. A notable feature within the park is "The Workers," a monument dedicated to Pittsburgh's steelworkers. Commissioned in 1997 and completed over fourteen years through the efforts of twenty-four artists led by IAC co-founder Tim Kaulen, this installation honors the city's industrial heritage. It incorporates relics such as I-beams from the nearby Hot Metal Bridge and shields from a local boiler house, with an actual ladle used for pouring hot metal.
South Shore Riverfront Park and Trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and community recreation, making it a must-visit destination in Pittsburgh.

"Fun Trail. However, stay away from the homeless encampments"
"Nice bike ride. However, starting to get a little scary with all the homeless encampments. Lots of trash near the locations. Hard issue. Want to find way to help homeless. However, also want to protect the bike route. We must find better ways to help the homeless."
"Picturesque serene trail used by many for walking, biking, and doggies alike. Lots of amazing views of the city and river. This was my first time enjoying on a beautiful sunny day. Very therapeutic. Also got to see art from the supportive trails arts initiative through the park which was very cool. Parking was available."
"Awesome place to sit by the water or go on a walk/bike/run. This area also had a trail nearby that led you to other areas of the park and other trails. Felt relaxing taking a stroll here"
"Great space to take children and pets for a walk. Unfortunately, the day we chose to visit it was freezing and we couldn’t stay longer. If you have a bicycle, the park connects with the trails surrounding the North Shore. The place has an intimate amphitheater for summer events."
