Dr. Downing has a special clinical interest in off-pump (beating heart) bypass surgery, thoracic aorta surgery, and minimally-invasive valve surgery. Renowned for his pioneering work, he performed the first minimally invasive aortic valve repair and valve sparing root replacement in Western New York over a decade ago. His clinical outcomes are among the best in New York State, earning him a spot on Buffalo Spree’s “The Best Doctors in Western NY” for seven consecutive years, most recently in 2017.
Dr. Downing's accolades include the Cahill Award for Surgery from Georgetown University School of Medicine, the Inouye Award for Outstanding Teaching from the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Surgery, and the Jonathan E. Rhoads Research Award from the same institution.
