"We hired Sapphire Construction for a renovation of the living room, kitchen and three bedrooms. The headaches we have had with John and his company have been big... Where do I begin? Do I begin with the new white countertops his guys ruined with grout? Or the lousy grout work on the backsplash? Or maybe the scratches they put in a newly refinished wood floor? Or the grease stains on the floor cause he sprayed wd40 on them? Or maybe the misaligned hanging lights? Or maybe it was how he keeps raising his price throughout the job and then threatening to put a lien on the house cause he wants final payment before all work is done? Or is it the mess that is left behind? Or signing off on incorrect measurements for the kitchen plans? Or the incorrect side paneling on the house? Light switches that were installed upside down? The misaligned cabinet knobs? Or was it the subcontractor he didn't pay that came to me looking for John? Or on move in day how I had no water cause his guys broke a valve? Oh and don't even have him or his guys touch your electric. You'd fail an inspection and/or burn your house down. John has yet to complete work. I had spoke to him on 11/24 "yeah we will be there on Wednesday". Then I don't hear from him until 12/3 "okay we will be there this Friday on the 8th". And guess what? A no show! Completely ghosted. I can also tell he's reading my text messages because he has his read receipts on. There were also a few incidents where my father had to step in and correct mistakes made by John and his guys. One was the main water valve they broke, and the other was a microwave part. When I called John to come fix the microwave he flips out on my father. He starts cursing and yelling like a lunatic and claiming "I'm too dangerous when I'm like this!" . I blame some of the shoddy work on inexperience from his guys but also a lack of respect his guys have for him. John will chew your ear off like he is your best friend then screw you over the moment he can. I cannot underestimate the lies he will tell you. He will manipulate you by using his father to get his way. When he talks about his father he means himself. Stay away from John and Sapphire construction if you respect not just your dollar but your sanity. He will straight up abandon your job like he did mine and leave your house in a more dangerous shape then how it was originally. Shop elsewhere."
"Ohhhh my where do I begin. Stay away from John He will hook you with a great price and vague contract, then nickel and dime you throughout the work days. I was referred to him to renovate my 2br condo, with a full gut of kitchen and bath. 2nd day of demo he tells me it's extra 1600 for the sheetrock and demo doesn't mean to the studs, yelled at me because he doesn't schedule extra days for jobs and it's gonna take 3 extra days to do it. Tiles were delayed , yelled at me again, sent me to Lowes by myself to get in stock tiles with no help. He doesn't respect women, stay away. Problems include regular switch installed to a 3 way switch which caused a short and I had to get an electrician to replace the switch and circuit breaker. Was supposed to come back because drain he pitched is too high and install kitchen backsplash. Had to hire a plumber and tile guy to fix his mess. He never called or texted me back within 2 week period. I was nothing but nice to him and he was super unprofessional with his mood swings."
"We decided to hire Sapphire to do our large renovation even though there were some negative comments that really did not seem that serious , John did an an amazing job explaining and designing the three bathrooms , kitchen , flooring ,paint colors and textures. They started on a Monday and before we knew it all of the removal was done in three days and the materials were delivered , the crew waisted no time in preparing and installing the new materials , before we knew it four weeks had passed and our renovation was completed to perfection , we could not be happier with the finished product , we have recommended them to a few friends and they have hired them to do their projects , we will be using them again ."
"I had received the contact information for Sapphire Construction in Staten Island while looking for bathroom tiles. The person had told me they had used them for multiple jobs, including a number of full house renovations. I had called John to come do the initial appraisal and I found his prices to be fair. John seemed to share my vision of what I was looking to do with my place, which was a 2 bedroom co-op. The job was simple, I needed the interior to be demo'd and I had Johns company install the bathroom. He gave me a 4 week timeframe to complete the job. John's men arrived a few weeks after the contract to start the demolition portion of the job. For about 2 weeks, the guys were there doing the work that was needed to be done. In addition, John had said he would do some other "clean up" work that was not part of the extremely vague contract as good gesture. After those 2 weeks, my house went unvisited for an extensive period of time (approximately 6 weeks) with zero contact. About 2 weeks into this period, I called John from a blocked number where he had informed me that some personal matters came up and his men would return to work that Friday, but did not arrive back to work until 4 weeks after. I had attempted to call many times, but was not answered. I had begun to wonder if I should contact a lawyer as many friends have said that this was a typical move of a contractor, but this seemed to go on for an extended period of time. I was informed they returned to the site and all of the sudden, things we had agreed on were reversed. Once the work was complete, there were some immediate things noticed with the work such as poorly taped ceilings, cracking in areas of the wall that were supposed to be patched (which was another debate we had which was about patching, cementing, re-skinning or covering with drywall). The bathroom actually was the one area I felt that the job was done well in, however, I don't think the proper paint was used as there is already cracking and chipping in the ceiling paint. Between the poor quality with the walls and paint, the vagueness of the contract, the chasing to get work done, and the level of professionalism, I was not pleased by the end of my experience. He had also upcharged me for the removal of the things we had spoken about such as the studs from the former carpet and other petty things that were done. Attached are some of the cracks that I have noticed. I know a house settles and these things happen, but they started appearing a month after being repaired. To finalize credibility, while looking for a couch in Staten Island, a worker had informed me that they had also used Sapphire and was met with the similar issues."
"What was supposed to be an 8 week job took 4 months and 1yr after completion still quality issues with workmanship are still coming up. Issues ranging from plumbing, venting, taping, painting, tile work, to new cold squeaky hardwood floors. I have to many photos to post sorry to say this project did not go smoothly at all. With a little more effort and professionalism I'm sure it would have turned out much better."
