Camp L'Observation 9234 State Route 3, Henderson, NY 13650

"This historical marker provides almost no information. It simply reads, "Camp de L'Observation. Erected by the French in 1756. Association Island." It indicated that it was erected by the State Education Department in 1932. The marker is in a small highway pullout on the north side of the roadway. There are no services here and overnight parking is not permitted. There isn't even a view due to the tall trees. I was able to find a bit more information online. The French built a fort nearby at Six Town Point in the 18th century. It is unclear who built the fort and when it was erected; however, it was most likely built in 1756 under General Montcalm's orders during the French and Indian War, just before his victory at the Battle of Fort Oswego in August 1756. The little fort, about 70 feet (21 meters) long on each side, was most likely abandoned shortly after the conflict. It became known as Association Island after the National Electric Light Association bought it in 1905. It is now a private RV park and resort."
