Established in 1920 by the visionaries of the Conservation Department, now known as the Department of Environmental Conservation, the forest was born from a collaborative initiative to restore clear-cut hillsides.

Visitors are invited to explore the park's moderate trails, perfect for hiking, snowshoeing, and wildlife viewing. The Beaver Pond Trail, a smooth path that stretches .75 miles when done as a loop, offers a tranquil journey through the woods. Begin your adventure past the larger picnic pavilion, following the red blazes with the hiker symbol. For those who prefer to immerse themselves in nature, retracing your steps along the trail is a delightful option.

Open year-round from sunrise to sunset, the forest is a haven for fall foliage enthusiasts and winter adventurers alike. During winter months, access Blacks Road from Route 166, just south of the intersection with County Highway 35, to avoid seasonal road closures.

A Rich History

The forest's name originates from a unique planting initiative involving twelve young businessmen, each with a child under ten, who envisioned the forest as an endowment for future generations. The initial planting was carried out by students from the Syracuse College of Forestry, laying the groundwork for what is now an Otsego County Forest.
