About the Dorothy McIlroy Bird Sanctuary
Dorothy McIlroy Bird Sanctuary
Welcome to the Dorothy McIlroy Bird Sanctuary, a serene haven for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers located at 1652 Lake Como Road, Moravia, New York. Nestled in the heart of the Summerhill wetland complex, this enchanting park and tourist attraction offers a unique glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the Finger Lakes region.
As you wander along the trails winding through hemlock and yellow birch hummocks, you'll find yourself immersed in the tranquil beauty of this wetland preserve. The sanctuary, positioned along the Lake Como outlet in Cayuga County, is a tranquil escape bisected by Fall Creek near its headwaters. The elevation and the ridge to the west create a cooler climate, nurturing a habitat reminiscent of the Adirondacks and fostering a diverse array of northern bird species. Keep an eye out for Dark-eyed Juncos, Hermit Thrushes, Winter Wrens, and the elusive Canada and Mourning Warblers.
The Dorothy McIlroy Bird Sanctuary is not only a birdwatcher's paradise but also a botanical wonderland. The preserve features a rare combination of rich shrub fen, peat swamp, and forest habitats, supporting a variety of uncommon and state-protected plant species. This exceptional environment is a testament to the sanctuary's dedication to conservation and biodiversity.
The sanctuary was established in memory of Dorothy McIlroy, a beloved ornithologist and early contributor to Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology. Her family's generous donation, along with support from the Finger Lakes Land Trust and other benefactors, has expanded the sanctuary to 260 contiguous acres, preserving it for future generations.
We acknowledge that our nature preserves exist on the homeland of the Haudenosaunee, and we strive to honor indigenous peoples' enduring connection to the land through our conservation efforts.
For visitors, the Finger Lakes Land Trust's "Go Finger Lakes" website offers a comprehensive guide to over 50 hiking, biking, paddling, skiing, and outdoor adventure destinations across the region. Please review our public use policies to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience at the sanctuary.

Reviews of Dorothy McIlroy Bird Sanctuary
"Nice quiet place to walk through the woods. Down to a deck overlooking the marsh of Lake commo."
"Nice quick little hike. Canadian geese and black ducks"
"Pretty woods with well-marked trails. I was there in winter, so there weren't a lot of birds. I will definitely visit again."
"Awesome must go to place. Nice walk. Don't forget bug spray!"
"This is a beautiful but small area that has some nicely maintained trails that go through woods, swamps, and bogs. Lots of beautiful birds and wildlife here as well. The total trail loop is just over a mile long so you won't be spending a lot of time here, but it's worth the visit if you get a chance to see this unique area."
