Explore the Natural Beauty of Laurel Lake Preserve
Welcome to Laurel Lake Preserve, a hidden gem located at 5501 New York 25, Laurel, New York 11948. As a pristine park and beloved tourist attraction, this 500-acre preserve offers visitors a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature and explore the rich biodiversity of the North Fork.
Owned and managed by the Town of Southold, Laurel Lake Preserve boasts 14 miles of scenic hiking trails that wind through a lush hardwood forest dominated by oaks, hickories, beeches, and maples. Discover the tranquility of a large, water-filled kettle hole, formed over 10,000 years ago, which is home to an array of fish species, including largemouth bass and rainbow trout.
Nature enthusiasts will delight in the abundance of wildlife that inhabits the preserve, from playful otters and majestic deer to snapping turtles and elusive foxes. Whether you choose the long hiking loop or a shorter trail, each path offers breathtaking views and a chance to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of this remarkable landscape.
The creation of Laurel Lake Preserve is a testament to the power of conservation and collaboration. Over 18 parcels were carefully protected and assembled over nearly 15 years, culminating in the conservation of 31 acres from the McFeely family in 2005. This final piece enabled the development of a trailhead providing access to the trails between the Main and North Roads, thanks to the efforts of the Town of Southold, Suffolk County Parks Department, Suffolk County Water Authority, and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
We invite you to plan your visit to Laurel Lake Preserve and experience the wonder of this natural sanctuary. As you explore, take a moment to reflect on the region's rich history as the ancestral territory of Indigenous communities, whose stewardship of the land we honor and continue to protect.
Please note that the Peconic Land Trust, while playing a vital role in the conservation of the area, does not collect or distribute funds from the 2% real estate transfer tax. These funds are directed to the Town where the property is located. Instead, the Trust raises its operating budget through charitable contributions and professional services.
We look forward to welcoming you to Laurel Lake Preserve, where nature's beauty awaits at every turn.

"Easy to walk, clearly marked well-maintained trails. Right off main road, easy to find, close to town, food, and ice cream. Free parking. 2.2 mile loop good for families. Horse trail also located here. Picnic area."
"I came down to check out the possibility of some freshly stocked brown and rainbow trout but sadly came ill prepared. There is an easily accessible launch area for kayaking or smaller bass skiffs but everything that I saw from shore is cluttered w/overgrowth,no angles to get a good cast going. I'll be bringing my waders next time, there's a few spots w/easy sandy bottom to get out past the overhang. For the non-fishing set it's a moderate hike w/well defined main trails and other less so to vear off and explore. I did find a really cool sandpit approx the size of a couple of football fields. There's lots of fresh tracks from big deer, turkeys and fox(they've gotta be loving it cause there's tons of bunnies everywhere). This is a cool place to kill a couple of hrs between a stroll around Greenport and the ride west."
"Of course we always watch for ticks on hikes, but all 7 hikers in our group found 10+ ticks on their person after hiking the green trail. The town needs to heavily consider posting signs to remind all who walk here of tick safety. We followed all precautions as usual but this was crazy today! BEWARE! Especially new hikers/kids playing. Enjoyed the walk/hike otherwise."
"Always a great hike on the many trails the park offers."
"A pleasant walk in the woods (the full loop is 2.5 miles) but not very good views of the lake, and, at least in winter, you can hear traffic noise for much of the way. There are numerous side-trails so follow the well-marked arrows carefully. The trail only covers a portion of the preserve, and it would be great to have trails that loop around the lake, and also connect with Sound Ave in the north."
