"Suffern Yard also known as Hillburn yard is a railroad yard that has been co-used for both freight operations and New Jersey Transit operations for many years. It has multiple tracks that span between Hillburn and Suffern. The west side entrance at Hillburn, now called the Suffern Yard switch, until recently, use to be known as the Ford Lead switch. That name coming from its past life as the entrance to the old Mahwah Ford plant that ceased operations long ago and the plant demolished. That access point to the yard is from track two of the main line tracks. The east side of Suffern Yard has access from Control Point SF, which is a New Jersey Transit interlocking . There is also a newer mid yard access point for the NJT trains to be able to enter/exit the yard if needed onto track two of the main tracks. Suffern Yard is quite visible from all directions. The New York State thruway wraps around from the bottom or east end of the yard, then runs along side the yard the entire length of the railroad south side of the yard. (compass west side) It has a nice view of the yard as the thruway bridge passed over the east end of the yard. Orange Ave (route 59) runs right along side of the railroad north (compass east) side of the entire yard, and crosses over the tracks on the far west end, right at the old Ford Lead switch. There is also the 4th St bridge that crosses over on a more west side (railroad west, compass north) of the yard. This is also where the NJT vehicle access point is, to the yard. There are also other views at that point with the Dog food switch right below the 4th st. bridge on the opposite side of the main tracks than the yard. The Dog food name for the past Triumph pet food plant that once occupied the building adjacent to the tracks, has access from track one of the main line tracks. The Dog Food track is it in itself part of the old track known as the Hillburn track, if I'm not mistaken. The old Hillburn track is still visible and runs down to the route 59 bridge across the tracks from the old Ford Lead switch. The old west Hillburn switch is for some reason, now called the corn oil switch because a company dealing with corn oil used the siding track for a very short time, not very long ago.Someone felt is was appropriate to change the name, for some reason. Anyway, it should be obvious that these tracks are live and can be dangerous. So be careful if you go out there. It is also considered trespassing to be about the tracks, or the yard for that matter, as it is railroad property. So guide yourself accordingly and be careful. But enjoy."
