The Pool: A Hidden Gem in Central Park

Location: West Dr. & 102nd St Crossing, New York, NY 10025, United States

Nestled near the West 100th Street entrance of Central Park, "The Pool" is a serene and somewhat secluded landscape that offers visitors a picturesque escape from the hustle and bustle of New York City. This charming water body is surrounded by lush greenery and is a popular spot for relaxing, picnicking, and enjoying the natural beauty of the park.

One of the highlights of The Pool is its spectacular fall foliage, featuring vibrant displays of red maples, sweetgums, and willows along its shoreline. This area is also a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, thanks to its proximity to the park's northern woodlands and the presence of water.

The Pool is part of a series of interconnected landscapes in Central Park, linked by water features. At its eastern edge, water flows under a rustic bridge and cascades down a 20-foot waterfall, transforming into a meandering stream known as the Loch. This stream winds through the woodland landscape called the Ravine and eventually flows into the Harlem Meer.

The creation of this water system was inspired by the natural presence of Montayne’s Rivulet, a stream that once flowed through the area. Today, The Pool is fed by both the original stream and City water, with a small grotto near its southern edge concealing the 48-inch pipe that supplies its source.

Visitors to The Pool can enjoy a peaceful stroll along its winding paths, beneath a lush tree canopy, accompanied by the soothing sounds of birdsong and charming waterfalls. This idyllic landscape was designed to bring a touch of the Adirondacks to Central Park, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers, history buffs, and those seeking a tranquil retreat.

Whether you're interested in birdwatching, exploring diverse tree species, or simply taking in the beauty of this photogenic area, The Pool offers a unique and enriching experience for all. Help keep this beautiful and vibrant part of Central Park thriving by supporting the Central Park Conservancy.

"Right off the 103rd Street Subway station(B,C train). A popular attraction of Central Park. It’s also right next to the Glen Span Arch. Beautiful scenery, busy yet calming."

"A large pond next to the Glen Span Arch. The Pool looks pretty much aesthetic and is one of my favorite places in the park for a picnic and just enjoying yourself."

"Probably the best place in Central Park to see the fall colors as they reflect over the water. This is a very scenic and yet secluded spot, as it's not that visible from the central park loop or even the 102nd transverse (though one may have a better chance of discovering this area if coming from here) If one is taking the loop, the area is on your right just as you are at the last part of the downhill section after the long and arduous west drive hill climb from Central Park north. It is indeed a fascinating area and the ducks seems to like it as well as they congregate in many numbers, enjoying the pool. There are also mini waterfalls. The fall scenery, with the combination of red, yellow and almost gold leaves on the trees as they reflect off the pond on a sunny day doesn't last long though. maybe at most a week when the temperature goes below 50f. Good place for picnics, exploring and/or just sitting on the bench and enjoying both the view and the sounds of this quaint area."

"I love the Pool! There are all kinds of critters here and if you look close enough, you can see them all. After only a few minutes, I spotted several kinds of fish, a turtle, and heard some bullfrogs. The trees are also gorgeous during the fall."
