Reviews of Mwesse & Co African Hair Braiding
"Called in and spoke to Mary for an appointment for my daughter to get styled. While I sat and watched her get started on her braiding I decided I wanted to get braided as well. Luckily for me someone was available and started on me right away! They were great with my 11 year old who is autistic & absolutely dislikes getting her hair done. She’s always afraid it will hurt & doesn’t like sitting for long periods of time. To both our surprise she didn’t complain once about pain or about how long she had to sit. This was the fastest she’s ever gotten her hair done ( about two hours ). Both our hairs looked beautiful and we left with smiles! The ladies here are all kind and helpful as well. Thank you!"
"A good experience overall! I would definitely recommend and I will certainly go back. I got mid-back medium box braids, it was $180 before tip, and it took about 3 hours (my natural hair is pretty short). I arrived and they go started working on me quickly. I often had all three women working on me at once, but almost always at least 2. For a lot of the time it was pretty painless, until we got to the crown and front of my head, but I expected that. My only complaint is that it felt a little unfinished. When I got on the train I noticed I had some unraveled braids that got set in the hot water, some really long ends that didn’t get trimmed, and a couple of knots. However, the rest of my experience was really great so I still give it 4 stars. EDIT: They reached out immediately offering to fix it. I didn't have the time to go back but I'm grateful that they offered!"
"I’ve been to Mwesse & Co twice and they do a great job! The prices are reasonable, they provide hair, and the salon is clean. I was in and out fairly quickly although the woman had to tend to her baby who was sleeping for the beginning of my service. Hopefully the baby isn’t there the next time and there are minimal distractions. That aside, I’d recommend Mwesse for your braids. I gave four stars instead of five because the second time I went, the lady who did my braids definitely upped the price and lied saying the owner told her to do that."
"I always believe in room for improvement which is why I gave 4 stars, but overall I thoroughly like this place. The owner promoted her business casually while at the supermarket and I decided to support another black person especially considering there is no traditional African hair salon in the neighborhood and I live right across the street. The first experience was a little lax and I did not particularly enjoy my daughter’s hair but Mary offered to fix. I ended up not fixing and instead I was offered a discount on the next service and took her up on the offer, and this time also getting my hair done. I am completely satisfied with how my daughter’s hair turned out. They had snacks and refreshments to keep her going. I would only say that my hair took pretty long. Patricia did an amazing job and the braids are very neat otherwise but my daughter finished significantly before me even with Mary stopping to do another client as well as starting my daughter’s hair after me. Overall I will be returning. The shop is beautiful, not your traditional African hair salon. And definitely great pricing. No need to travel to Harlem for great quality hair!"
