Mel & Mary's Cottages

"We had a fantastic stay from June 14th through the 16th 2022. The night before we arrived, Holmes county was decimated by a storm with 89 MPH winds and some small tornados. Many roads were closed due to down trees and most of the county including the cabins was without power. Leon, the proprietor called us the morning of the 14th and offered us the opportunity to cancel. We were already halfway here so we decided to come anyway. To accommodate us on our stay, Leon purchased a generator which ran the pump and gave us running water and the ability to cook in the cabin. It was hot, and the AC was sketchy. We had a fantastic stay in spite of the adversity! All of Berlin was shut down while we were here, yet we still managed to find lots of things to do. We enjoyed the remote location and the amazing environment. The cabins are immaculately clean and site is wonderful.This was my third stay in the Hummingbird Cabin and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a peaceful retreat. My guest on this trip was an old friend who has spent most of her life in the bustle of Los Angeles. She was blown away by the beauty and tranquility of the location. We had a great stay"

"Quaint setting, clean accommodations, and simple/no fuss. The light bulb above the sink burned out upon arrival, the fridge froze our eggs & butter and the shower spigot was very stiff-minor annoyances. I arrived by myself with my two children (2 and 8 months) and set each of them down. I scanned the room for choking hazards and electrical outlets. There were no covers on any of the outlets even though Mel&Mary advertise as being family-friendly and even have a play area outside. as I scanned for hazards, I did not realize the fireplace was not only on, but used to eat the entire cottage. There was no warning sign, and nothing to protect anyone from getting burned on the glass . My two year-old touched it and got 2nd degree burns on both hands. I called Leon and he texted me the address of the nearest ER. He said "oh no" but did not apologize. The ER in Millersburg was excellent with her. The next day Leon texted me for an update and I called him and told him she received treatment for 2nd degree burns in the ER. In addition, I told them he needs to have warning sign in every cottage that the fireplace heats the cottage and is hot and needs to provide a safety gate for families with children. I feel that Leon and the family are responsible to cover any bill we incur from the ER visit. at the very least. While checking out in the office I observed a sign which stated that the family is not responsible for any accidents that occur and that parents are responsible for their children. Obviously I am responsible for the safety of my children when it is within my reasonable and foreseeable ability to do so. But a HOT fireplace when I told them ahead of time I was bringing two children?"

"Holmes County, OH is a wonderful place anytime, but especially in the autumn. Mel and Mary's Cottages are in the rolling hills just outside Charm, OH. It's a wonderful place to relax and just sit on the porch and read, or take off to the MANY shops and spend the day. There are lots of excellent Amish restaurants within easy driving distance. The cottages are very nice with two bedrooms, a living/dining area and a kitchen equipped with a refrigerator, cook top, microwave. Each also has a has fireplace. We've been coming back every October for a number of years now and highly recommend it! I should mention that on the property there are also rentals for larger family gatherings if that's of interest."

"Magical place to take the family.... Especially little ones! Caretaker's are kind, accommodating, but also give you your privacy. Houses are beautiful, tidy, and fully stocked. Kids love the fishing, paddle boating, hills, and play area. Scenery is peaceful and gorgeous...... Wonderful place to make memories."

"Rented a couple of the units by the lake for a Bachelorette weekend getaway. The lake and surrounding areas were beautiful. We got two of the units that were closer together and it worked out perfectly. They were very clean and updated. Definitely plan on taking another trip in the future."
