Emmanuel Episcopal Church, located in the heart of Pittsburgh at 957 West North Avenue, is a vibrant and welcoming community dedicated to fostering spiritual growth, social justice, and communal harmony. Rooted in the teachings of Micah 6:8, "Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God," Emmanuel Episcopal Church strives to embody these values through various worship services, community events, and outreach programs.
One of the church's unique offerings is the "Jazz @ Emmanuel" series, which brings together music, scripture, and reflection to explore themes such as peace, love, community, and gratitude. These special jazz services, held regularly, invite attendees to contemplate and act upon the transformative power of peace and love. For instance, the upcoming Jazz Service on April 14 titled "Instruments of Peace" will delve into how a commitment to peace can change lives, encouraging both reflection and action.
The church also emphasizes the importance of connection and support within the community. Through events and messages, Emmanuel Episcopal Church promotes unity, shared joy, and mutual support, underscoring the significance of living in harmony and facing life's challenges together. This is evident in their various community-focused initiatives, such as the Free Food Share Box and the distribution of gift cards to those in need, spearheaded by the congregation and led by the Senior Warden, Patty Cislon.
During the Advent season, the church provides a space for congregants to ponder the miracle of Christ's coming, celebrating with services that highlight hope, grace, and the significance of Christ's birth. The church also offers multiple services during Holy Week, culminating in Easter Sunday celebrations, both in-person and via Zoom, to accommodate all worshippers.
Emmanuel Episcopal Church is committed to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. Their guiding principles, encapsulated in the acronym SANCTUS, emphasize safety through respect, reverence, adherence to Holy Scripture, prayer-centeredness, expectancy, patient listening, and diverse fellowship.
To stay connected with the Emmanuel Episcopal Church community, individuals can follow their Facebook page and subscribe to updates for news and event information. The church also collaborates with various local organizations and other Episcopal entities, fostering a broader sense of community and support.
For more information, visit their Facebook page or explore their resources for daily scripture readings and prayers. Emmanuel Episcopal Church invites everyone to join their services and community events, offering a place of worship, reflection, and connection for all.

"Pittsburgh's "Jazz Church." The Jazz services are wonderful and I'm kicking myself for not having checked them out sooner. As to the architecture of the building, as much as I admire Richardson, he really goofed on the structural system in this building. I know very well its place in architectural history, but the trusses supporting the roof were idiotically designed with no resistance to splaying, thus it is no surprise that the church walls bowed outward. The building should probably have been condemned long ago for its unsafe design OR tie rods should have been required to be added. But the walls one day stopped moving and the building has lasted far longer than most. God works in mysterious ways."
"I walked in the door for a Saturday evening Easter Vigil 25 yrs ago and was so taken in and up by the service and the congregation that I kept coming back. The acceptance was very real and God was definitely in attendance."
"Attended Christmas Eve Mass. It's a lovely church with a friendly, engaged congregation and a Vicar who puts his whole being into spreading the Word of Jesus. ❤️"
"God is welcome here. The people accept you and welcome you like old friends. God’s Love for His people is preached and evident. Pastor Donald C Youse is a gifted Biblical teacher and a trustworthy friend."
"This H.H. Richardson church (1885-6) is a pleasure to walk around and admire the architecture of. I didn’t get to go inside, but there is a lovely little courtyard on its side with close views of the details."
