Vinegar Hollow: A Hidden Gem of Emsworth, PA
Located at 5401 Center Ave, Emsworth, PA 15202, Vinegar Hollow is a newly established park that offers a refreshing escape into nature. This pristine greenspace, covering over 46 acres primarily in Kilbuck Township, is a recent acquisition by the Hollow Oak Land Trust. After more than five years of dedicated advocacy and fundraising, the trust has successfully secured four parcels of undeveloped land, thanks to a generous grant of $329,000 from the Allegheny County Trail Development Fund and an additional $200,000 from the Colcom Foundation.
Vinegar Hollow boasts over 2 miles of scenic trails accessible from a trailhead on Center Avenue in Ben Avon. These trails offer the community a wonderful opportunity to explore and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The Hollow Oak Land Trust is committed to working with local community members and volunteers to enhance and expand the trail network, ensuring that Vinegar Hollow remains a cherished outdoor space for all.
The establishment of Vinegar Hollow is a significant conservation achievement, benefiting the neighboring communities of Kilbuck, Emsworth, Ben Avon, Ohio Township, Ben Avon Heights, Avalon, and Bellevue. "We’re grateful that, with community leadership and support, we’ve been able to protect this unique community asset," said Sean Brady, Executive Director of the Hollow Oak Land Trust. "The funding from the Allegheny County Trail Development Fund and the Colcom Foundation were crucial to the success of this project, and we’re excited to begin refining this greenspace."
The Hollow Oak Land Trust continues to seek donations through the Stewardship Fund to support the ongoing improvements and management of Vinegar Hollow. For those interested in contributing, please visit [HOLT Donations](https://bit.ly/HOLTDonations).
This latest acquisition by the Hollow Oak Land Trust adds to their impressive conservation efforts, which have protected 160 acres of woodlands in the past year alone. Their projects include the Thorn Hollow Greenway, which will connect Coraopolis to Robin Hill Park, the Montour Run Greenway that links the Montour Trail through Montour Woods to Moon Park, and the Trout Run project, which will complete a 10-mile loop to Moon Park.
"We are thrilled to see this land protected and preserved as a green space for the area," said Zahava Bennett, President of the Hollow Oak Board of Directors. "Healthy greenspaces are vital to a thriving community, and we are looking forward to this opportunity to nurture the natural ecosystem while providing a usable outdoor space for residents."
Come and experience the natural beauty and tranquility of Vinegar Hollow, a testament to the power of community action and a commitment to preserving our natural environment.

"A quite little spot tucked in Ben Avon/Aavlon/ some little space of town in the North! Lol. The opening We found was right in the area of The "Mike Fincke Astronaut" sign. It's not marked, I guess if You know, You know! It is a beautiful hidden gem! Way more expansive than originally thought walking in. One main trail, that breaks into two once You get half way through the loop, however so many points to explore & go off trail... ¡¡Quiet, Calm, Peaceful!!"
"Really nice trail in Ben Avon. Our dog seemed to love running up and down the hills. The Google GPS layout of it isn't 100% accurate, but you can't really get lost as it's basically a single path. It's also got a few muddy patches since it is along a creek, so be prepared for that. Definitely a place to go back to!"
"Nice easy trail. The entrance is hard to find and unlabeled. See the first pic for practically hidden entrance and unrelated nearby signs. It's on the opposite side of the street from the Presbyterian church (see last pic, standing at trail looking at church). Once you find the way in, it's a nice fairly easy walk on a clearly defined path. The path is pretty well maintained. Water trickling along the stream next to the trail makes a soothing sound. Easy parking on the side of the road. Recommended for families or easy-moderate scenic walks."
"Great little hidden gem of a trail in Ben Avon, PA. Easy to miss, this trail is just the thing you need for a great stress relieving hike."
"Fun short walk. Lots of little waterfalls and fallen trees. Less than an hour loop."
