Reviews of UCLA Sleep Disorders Center
"This place is a scandal. So is the doctor who is the director. If you are suffering with insomnia and looking for a solution, be prepared to wait, wait, and wait some more. I first had a consultation in February only to wait 6 months for the appointment. I told the doctor I already had 2 sleep studies before which showed I did not have sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, etc. Did he care? No. Sleep studies are a huge money maker for the doctor and the hospital. That’s why they pack em in every night at UCLA. It is now over 1 month since the study. Have I heard back from this horrible doctor? No. Do I expect he will help me? No. Just go to Dr. Norman in Santa Monica. At least they answer the phone."
"Sleep Study at UCLA Don’t call. They won’t answer. This study was ordered from a pulmonary Dr., so if you're calling to make an apptmt, start with your primary, who might refer you to a specialist, who will order. All details are sent via email. We were a bit nervous based on these reviews we read last minute/day but don’t be. The room notes below, might help manage expectations. All working there were super kind and helpful. Parking & Entry— Once you get close, follow the directions with photos they sent via email (not the GPS). Once in the garage, you’re there. Read the signs. Get buzzed in Room: It’s not a hotel-quality stay. This is a hospital bed/room setup. It’s quiet. There aren’t windows, because it’s in a basement. No outdoor city noise. Tip: Bring a pillow and blanket from home to be more comfortable. If you are going with a minor/child, you will sleep in the same room in another hospital bed (so bring your own pillow, too). There is a TV. You’re allowed a phone, but they want 7 hours of sleep and wake you up between 5:30 - 6AM, so, lights out by 10 PM suggested. (She noted via intercom to please begin to shut down/go to sleep.) Our nurse, Joy, who did the wire attachments and watched the monitors overnight said If you need anything just talk, and she will come in. Didn’t need to. It goes quickly. But it’s a hospital-like environment and you’re wired, so it’s not the world’s most comfortable night. But that’s the set-up. It was totally fine."
"A completely awful experience comprising of outdated technology lent out without care, and billed at outrageous prices. I disputed the bill and got sent to collections where I will continue to argue. Far superior technology can be bought and owned for only $350 at Best Buy. (The Oura sleep monitor ring). UCLA “Health” charged about $1500 for one night “study” at home! I did everything, and they did nothing, but tell me what I already knew. If I had the time I would picket outside to warn people of their scam."
"I had a sleep test done here in June 2023. The actual experience in the lab was great, no complaints. The instructions they provide about where to show up are clear, and the parking situation seemed secure (cost $10-11) and you can enter the lab lobby directly from the parking area. My technician, Ignacio, was professional and did a solid job. The room was more like a hospital ward with a gurney-style bed with course sheets, but it was private, quiet and I have no major complaints. The reason for four stars is that it was difficult to reach their office during business hours, a problem that other reviews have noted. If this happens to you, I recommend that you call back and select the option for the UCLA “patient experience” desk (seems kind of like a quality control office). They told me that there had been problems with people not being able to reach the sleep lab, and shortly after I spoke to the “patient experience” desk, someone from the sleep lab reached out to me."
"Parking was easy as there were several options. The only difficulty was in entering the facility through the parking lot. There were virtually no signs and there was no clear way to enter the building except to go through the underground parking lot where there was not a walkway. It didn't seem very safe walking through an empty parking lot at 8:30 PM. There wasn't any security or signs. The entire Sleep Study experience was good except that they did not have a shower to wash off the GUI material that they require for the sleep study to be applied all over the head. I did find it a very pleasant experience considering it was a procedure. I do highly recommend it although I wish they would have signs and improve the entrance."
