About the Big Oak Nature Park
Big Oak Nature Park
Address: 5210 Center Rd, Ashtabula, OH 44004, United States
Nestled just north of North Bend Road on the east side of Route 45, Big Oak Nature Park offers visitors a serene escape into nature's untouched beauty. Spanning over 30 acres, this park is a testament to the natural splendor of Ashtabula, Ohio. Originally a small farm, the land boasts diverse ecosystems, including wetlands, small streams, and a lush forest with a towering tree canopy.
Acquired by the Saybrook Township Park as a generous gift from the Ashtabula Foundation more than a decade ago, Big Oak Nature Park has undergone numerous enhancements to welcome visitors while preserving its pristine state. The park features well-maintained walking trails, covered with wood chips, that wind through the forest and lead to a remarkable natural landmark: a massive swamp white oak tree. This ancient tree, estimated to be between 100 and 150 years old, stands over 18 feet in circumference and is considered one of Ohio's oldest trees. A leisurely walk from the park entrance to this majestic oak takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
Big Oak Nature Park remains intentionally primitive to safeguard the rich biological diversity that thrives within. The park's untouched environment provides a perfect setting for educational programs, making it a valuable resource for local schools and colleges. A Biological Assessment and Management Plan commissioned in 2007 highlights the park's ecological significance.
Visitors are encouraged to explore this natural haven with caution, as the terrain can be rough and the trails are intentionally kept primitive. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a student, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Big Oak Nature Park offers a unique and enriching experience in the heart of Ashtabula.
Reviews of Big Oak Nature Park
"Cool little patk that is in desperate need of clean up and maintenance"
"Not well managed. Tires dumped at the entrance by the cistern. Immediately saw poison ivy EVERYWHERE. A tree fell across trail and didn't realize until we stepped around/through the limbs a poison ivy vine was wrapped all around the fallen tree. Not exactly looking forward to the next week or so of anticipated ivy welts. It is shady and looks like it might be a beautiful walk. Not worth taking a chance at any more ivy encounters on the trail so we turned back after 1/8th of a mile. Disappointing experience."
"Nice woods experience and nice old tree. Only thing I don't care for is the trash. Clean up after yourselves people."
"Highly disappointed, thought this was a live tree, also it just sits in the parking lot next to a bunch of trash!"
"Bring the bug spray. Extra strength with Deet!! we didn't make it to the big tree in the center we had to turn around because the mosquitoes were just too bad."
