Phillip Henninger House - Historic Site
About the Business
Standing as a resilient monument to the past, the Phillip Henninger House is Parma’s oldest surviving home and an essential piece of Northeast Ohio's rich history. Constructed in 1849 by Bavarian immigrants Philip and Sophia Henninger, this historic residence is built from robust sandstone sourced from the Henninger Quarry. The stone was also instrumental in the construction of the breakwall protecting the port of Cleveland and the locks of the Ohio and Erie Canal, playing a crucial role in the region's economic development.
The house has witnessed significant historical events, from the Civil War through to modern times, enduring through the administrations of 32 U.S. Presidents. Its thick stone walls—30 inches in the basement and 14 inches above—stand testament to the craftsmanship of the era.
For over four generations, the Henninger family resided in this home until it became vacant in 1988. Facing potential demolition, the house was saved by the determined efforts of the Parma Historical Society and other local organizations. A successful campaign raised $470,000 to purchase and preserve the property, leading to its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, the Phillip Henninger House is owned by the City of Parma and managed under a conservation/historic easement by West Creek Conservancy. Efforts are ongoing to restore and transform the homestead into a community space featuring a new Visitor Center, trailhead, and picnic area along the West Creek Greenway—a proposed hike and bike trail network that will link the Cleveland Metroparks West Creek Reservation to the Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Visitors to the Phillip Henninger House can enjoy learning about local history while contributing to the preservation of this vital landmark. The site offers a unique glimpse into the past and stands as a symbol of the community's resilience and commitment to heritage.

Reviews
"It's really cool to get a bit of history and read the plaques up in front. That said, the site has not been fully restored yet and it the house itself cannot be visited (as far as I know - I only stepped on the premises), but I'm sure that it'll be even nicer to visit for folks in the future."
"Stopped in the middle of the night just to check the site out. The gutter was hanging from half of the building. Causing it to seem almost on the verge of abandoned."
"A living piece of settler's history."
