Dr. James Volk, Optometrist

"My 6 year old daughter and I went to an appointment, it was my daughter’s 1st eye appointment. She didn’t understand everything to do and when he told her to read the bottom line, she asked where and I went over and pointed to it and he told me to sit down. I at first brushed it off thinking he was just used to a certain way of things but then he told my daughter to switch hands to read with her other eye. She brought her other hand up to her eye and started to put her other hand down and he yanked her hand down to her lap which through her off balance from having her other hand at her eye and he grabbed that hand and slapped it to her face! I spoke up and said “YOU DONT HAVE TO BE ROUGH WITH HER!” .. his response! “Speak up!” I was angry! I said “I SAID! YOU DONT HAVE TO BE FREAKING ROUGH WITH HER!!” .. he ignored me! He asked “do you want her to have glasses?” I said “does she need them???” He’s like “maybe? Maybe reading glasses? Depends on you” … um im sorry what? No it doesn’t! It depends on her eyes! I kept asking “does she need glasses” he ignored me again and said well talk about it at her next appointment. No we absolutely will NOT! We will not be coming back! And because my insurance only pays for one appointment per year I decided I needed to buy my glasses. Oh, that’s a whole other story. The lady was rude, told me I could only get off the back wall behind her knowing I had a budget of $150. Everything on the back wall was $150 and up. I looked around the room and said what about these? “No! I told you on the back wall is your budget!” I said okay, looked again, and wasn’t seeing anything I like or in my budget. I went over to a turn style and said “okay how much are these?? Because I might actually like this pair” she turned her back to me looking through papers and said “of course, you won’t find anything above $150 on that thing” and still had her back to me. I’m like “just do these! Whatever!” And we left. They were so rude. We won’t be going back!!"

"Dr. Volk is never someone I want to see again. The only time I went he said less than 10 words and just excused me and dmsaid I can't help you with glasses because they don't do anything medical! He had an attitude too and just didn't want to check my eyes. He's a horrible Dr that I believe was tired after a long day, and decided to take it out on me!"

"My Mom had a stroke in 2019 and her only ongoing remnant from that is expressive aphasia. This means that she sometimes says the wrong word, and I had asked the staff to note that when we made the appointment with Dr. Volk, who is one of a handful of eye drs in her insurance plan. Dr. Volk's office cancelled my Mom's appointment in a voicemail because, his receptionist(?), staff member(?) said when we called back to ask why, the dr. would not have the patience to deal with a person with expressive aphasia who is otherwise fully cognitive. I explained that a friend would come with her to make sure she is answering questions correctly but the staff person said it could be a waste of time for my Mom to come, as the dr. may become inpatient and turn her away. I asked whether the dr. had his own difficulties or was nearing retirement and the staff person said "Yes." I should have read reviews before making this appointment. It felt very sad for me that this dr. would just cancel my Mom's appointment without even giving her a chance, prejudging her as a person with some kind of insurmountable disability. He suggested my Mom go to an ophthamologist (see photo) but ophthamologists do not have special training in expressive aphasia any more than optometrists. Also, her primary care physician would have referred her to an ophthamologist were that needed (as her primary care physician is a good and patient dr. who knows you only need to be patient and listen to understand a person with expressive aphasia). Like others have said for this optometrist who uses the title "dr," (but is quick to say to patients, don't treat me like a real dr who would serve patients with compassion and patience), I would give a 0-star review but have to give at least one to be able to post."

"If I could leave 0 stars I would. This place is a complete joke. I went for an eye exam and to get new glasses in January. The eye exam MAYBE took 5 min. Clearly wasn’t thorough enough because the prescription is clearly wrong. I go to pick up the new glasses I PAID $200 for 2 weeks later and can’t see out of them. The rude staff let me know they was made wrong and would need to be sent back and fixed. Fast forward another 3 weeks, the glasses are in again, put them on still not right. But this time was treated very rude and like the biggest inconvenience because I said they still aren’t right. So I’m told I’d need to make an appt to have the exam redone. Fast forward another 3 weeks, go to my appt wait for 45 to be seen after my appt time, sit down he says the prescription is right. He tells me read the top line of letters ( the biggest ones) I do and again says yep they are right. I said I’ve worn glasses for a really long time and never had them be blurry or cause a migraine within an hour of having them on. To which I was then told if they are a problem then wear my old glasses! So now I have a $200 paper weight and still no glasses I can wear. 0/10"
