"A gem of a place. Make a point to stop and appreciate the talent and genius of artist Charles Burchfield."
"A little historic treasure. You can feel the spirit of Burchfield in this house. Wonderful guides/volunteers."
"Charles Burchfield is one of the most significant artists ever to emerge from Ohio. His family home in Salem is an incredible testament to his humble but supportive Midwestern roots. The house remains just the same as when he lived there, now filled with exhibits illustrating both his family life and artistic career. Especially intriguing is the circumstance that the surrounding neighborhood has also remained largely the same since Charles and family lived there over 100 years ago. This means that many of the scenes he painted around the house can still be viewed by visitors today! Before visiting the house, be sure to familiarize yourself with the general story of Burchfield's incredible career. When visiting, leave time also for downtown Salem - a classic small Ohio town which has embraced its associations with Burchfield, as evidenced by several large murals. The town library also has Burchfield material on display."
"A rare gem of American Art History. You can visit the home, garden, neighborhood and community that formed Charles Burchfield as the iconic watercolorist he was."
"We just saw the outside because I added it to the ghost tour I made for my kids. It’s how I teach them history. (I admit, it’s difficult to spin a watercolorist into someone fascinating for them.) It’s a cute place. Would love to return during the day."
