Spirit of 76 Museum
Located at 201 N Main St, Wellington, OH 44090, the Spirit of 76 Museum is a cherished local museum and tourist attraction dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of Wellington and its surrounding countryside. Established in 1968 by the Southern Lorain County Historical Society, the museum was created to house the extensive Alex Justice collection. The founding members of the society included Harrison Comstock, Ernst Henes, Col. James MacDermott, and A.J. Weber, who collectively aimed to share the vibrant history of the area.
The museum is housed in a historic building constructed in 1870, originally one of the first warehouses used for storing cheese. The building's third floor, uniquely engineered for the drainage of ice used before the advent of refrigeration, was later transformed into exhibit space through the dedication and volunteer efforts of the society's founding members and local craftsmen.
The Spirit of 76 Museum boasts a diverse and ever-growing collection of memorabilia and artifacts contributed by residents of Wellington and beyond. Among its treasured items are eight oil paintings by the renowned artist Archibald Willard, including his famous work "Spirit of '76," which inspired the museum's name. These paintings were generously donated to the Herrick Memorial Library and subsequently entrusted to the museum.
Visitors to the Spirit of 76 Museum can explore a variety of exhibits that detail the colorful history of Wellington, from its early days to the present. Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply curious about the local heritage, the museum offers an engaging and educational experience for all. Come and discover the spirit of Wellington at the Spirit of 76 Museum!
