Reviews of UH Geauga Medical Center Emergency Room
"I've never had much of a wait during times of needing emergency medical care. The waiting room was super helpful during the power outage. It was the only place available for me to charge my phone."
"This ER treated me as if I did not matter when I cut off a finger tip. I was told to take Tylenol and given an antibiotic. This is not okay"
"Years ago, I would have recommended UH Geauga to anyone. My family and I have used the ER, I've had babies there, I and other family members have had testing and radiology performed there, etc. In the past, we've had great care from friendly people. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. We brought my son to the ER in August for a broken wrist. From the very beginning, it was clear the level of care has declined. This resulted in a child being given an IV that blew out the viens in his arm (something we brought to the attention of the nurse and resident, but they didn't fix until he was crying in pain and watching his arm bubble up), gave him an insufficient dosage of pain medication to the point he was screaming and writhing in pain while they reset the break (we had to lay our bodies across him to keep him from jumping off the table), and finally the doctor reset the break *incompletely,* and then casted his arm *while it was still broken.* Our question of why they would cast his arm before xraying it was ignored. They refused to bring in an orthopedist (we were told by our nurse that the on-call orthopedist "gets mad when we call him after hours") and instead sent our child home with a broken arm and instructions to see an ortho "ASAP." They now claim the ortho was called that night; we were never told that happened and never offered to speak to the actual doctor even by phone. First thing in the morning we went to our family orthopedist who was shocked and said "they sent you home like this?" He then immediately sent us to another hospital for proper treatment. Once at the other hospital, they had to remove the cast, and our child ended up needing surgery to correct his arm. To top it all off, when I contacted UH about all of this, it was clear that they were not going to have a conversation, as that could admit fault. I got a letter that stated they looked into it, didn't see any issue with the ER sending a kid home in immense pain with a still-broken wrist, and sent us the full bill for the treatments regardless of them not correcting the problem. The "on-call" ortho doctor (who *never actually saw my child*) apparently declared the still-broken arm "sufficient care." I tried to call UH Patient Advocacy about this thinking a conversation could be had, and instead got a letter stating "we do not have an appeals process. At this time, we consider the matter to be closed and will no longer be able to respond to any further inquires." So, after months of begging them to listen to us and hopefully improve patient care for others, they've made things clear: In the case that you do not receive adequate care from your medical provider, UH refuses to take even one moment to have a phone conversation with concerned patient/parent. Them billing out $6,000 for treating a child with a broken arm, but not actually fixing the broken arm and just suggesting we go somewhere else the next day to actually fix it just adds insult to injury. Had I known this is what they would do to him, I would have driven right downtown for proper care (and that is exactly what I'll do from now on.) This is incredibly disappointing to someone who has trusted UH Geauga for decades for myself and my children. Thankfully, there are many quality options for healthcare in Northeast Ohio. I can't go back in time and save my kid from the awful experience we had at UH Geauga, but I can advise other parents: if your child is ill or has an injury, *drive directly past UH Geauga and seek care elsewhere.*"
"My husband was in allot of pain. We called the nurses hotline from his insurance and they informed us to get right to the hospital. My mistake was driving him to the hospital so we have been in the ER for hours now, we are still waiting. He's lying on the ground in a fetal position and they just walk right around him. They haven't even taken his vitals signs or anything. This hospital just does not care for their patients. You could be dying and they just walk right around you. So the lesson is to always call for a ambulance, they will see you right away when you get there. This is totally unacceptable. I will never, ever recommend this hospital. Seriously you could be dying and they just don't care. I wish I could give them no stars"
"They did save my life after my heart attack. I would like to know the doctors name who wanted to pull the plug. God bless the respiratory therapist that noticed my oxygen was low and increased it. The next day I was moving. They should fire the doctor and give her a raise. Trust your nurses not your doctor. Do t go foe urgent care. 4 1/2 hours didn't see anyone"
