About the Norris Geyser Basin Museum
The Norris Geyser Basin Museum, located in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, is a must-visit for tourists and nature enthusiasts. This museum showcases the hottest, oldest, and most dynamic thermal area in Yellowstone, with features that change daily due to seismic activity and water fluctuations. The basin consists of two areas, Porcelain Basin and Back Basin, each offering a unique sensory experience.
Named after Philetus W. Norris, the second superintendent of Yellowstone, the museum provides insights into the geothermal geology, hydrothermal features, and life in thermal areas. The museum's distinctive stone-and-log architecture is a National Historic Landmark and a prime example of "parkitecture."
Visitors can also explore nearby attractions like Roaring Mountain, Virginia Cascades, and Monument Geyser Basin, each offering a unique perspective on the park's natural wonders. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot black and grizzly bears, sagebrush lizards, chorus frogs, and killdeer in the basin.
Whether you're interested in the science behind geothermal activity or simply want to take in the stunning natural beauty of Yellowstone, the Norris Geyser Basin Museum is the perfect starting point for your exploration. Plan your visit to this fascinating institution and immerse yourself in the wonders of Yellowstone National Park.

Reviews of Norris Geyser Basin Museum
"This is my favorite basin in the park. We go to Yellowstone at least twice a year and look for little used hikes. Like the Natural Bridge. But we always go to Norris."
"May be the best place to see in the entire park! Get here early!"
"This place is amazing and doesn’t feel like earth but a different planet. Highly recommended! Bring walking shoes!"
"Don’t sleep on this amazing stop! A little stroll down the wooden boardwalk and you’ll find yourself looking down at the geyser field. The walk down, through and around the field is well worth it to get so close to the geysers and enjoy the close up vantage point. (Be sure to use bathroom in the parking lot, and take cash as there is a bookstore close to the geyser museum at the top of the hill)."
"It's just an incredible thing to see, to be there, and see all of these strange, strange things happening in front of you. The smells, the heat, the steam, the volcanic gasses, are a fantastic, 5 star experience. None of the geysers erupted during the 2 hours we spent there, but we only spent 1 1/2 on the trail. Still enough amazing geological features to make it totally worth it. I already want to do the next trail. Expect a lot of walking. The trails go for miles and miles. The one we took, the one with the huge Steamboat Geyser, was 1.6 miles, but not too many stairs. Why only 4 stars? The stink of sulphur is SO strong. It is everywhere in Yellowstone, but you get up close and personal with it on the trail. Hot, steaming, clouds of gas blow every direction. If you smoke or have diminished lung capacity, or COPD, I would recommend caution. Of you're fairly healthy, and are interested in such things, go, your first opportunity. The museum is near the parking lot, and the fumes are minimal."
