Reviews of Canyon Creek Charcoal Kilns
"The kilns are SO. COOL. The interpretive signage is pretty faded, so it's hard to read some/see all the pictures, but you get a good idea of what it was like 125+ years ago by walking through the site. There is one kiln that has been restored/caged for safe entry; the other 22 (23 total!) are open, but you don't get to enter. A really neat historical site that I was unaware of until recently, but was hugely important to the mining industry at the end of the 19th century. I would definitely recommend an ATV or vehicle with good ground clearance for the drive in. 2/3 of the trip from Melrose is perfectly drivable with a regular car, but my Camry required slow, careful driving to get all the way back to the kilns. Lots of ruts, rocks, pits...it's an "improved" road, but not much better than a logging road. Be aware. Save your oil pan."
"Interesting stop where you can learn about how they made charcoal in the 1800s. Worth a visit. Be careful of rattlesnakes and bring insect repellent."
"Visit the Canyon Creek Charcoal Kilns! Spotted moose, bear, antelope, deer, goats and vultures. Difficult to find, direct route over the bridge was closed off. Alternate route took us up and around the mountain."
"Great place to visit! Signs are well done and informative and the trail is well kept. They're also doing a great job preserving these!"
