Reviews of Red Spruce
"Ordered a chicken Caesar. First attempt came out with the romaine lettuce leaves uncut, so big 6" pieces of lettuce. Second attempt came out about 15 minutes later after I asked em to just chop it up. Employees were super nice and apologetic. Anyways, coming from a guy who was super hungry and in the mood for a Caesar salad...the salad was terrible. It had a soap quality. Maybe I ordered poorly, but I've never had a full Caesar I just walked away from and left on the table."
"Took 50 minutes to get a (cold) sandwich and burger. Extremely variable is the best way to describe this place. We've been about 20 times and they're always changing the menu and staff. It can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 60 minutes to get your food, but they don't tell you anything when you order (a heads up would've been helpful). I know staffing and ingredients sourcing is a challenge in Juneau but other places like Devil's Hideway, Zerelda's, etc don't seem to have the same consistency issues. Love Forbidden Peak, but Squire's across the street has more consistent food service so we'll likely start heading there more often this winter when we want drinks + food."
"TLDR: pricy, tasty and creative, some minor issues with the cooking. A bit overpriced for “street food”, but nonetheless this remains one of the better restaurants we’ve found in Juneau. We actually came twice - once getting fish and chips and the udon bowl, and next both getting burgers. Our first meal was awesome. Excellent fish, great udon bowl, although the chicken in the bowl was slightly dry, and both meals were $22-26. The next time we both got burgers and didn’t realize until we sat down that they didn’t ask how we’d like the burgers cooked - a shame because they came back very well done and bone dry. The patty melt onions were, conversely, underdone. But the flavors of the sauce and the bread were awesome. So, I think there are some kinks to work out with some of the dishes, but overall, I think this place is great and worth supporting."
"Update - great ambience and adventursome cuisine. Today's special was "4 Taiwanese Bao Buns," and the flavors and textures were genuinely good. The steamed buns were light and soft, the pork was tasty, the spices were authentic, and the fresh basil was perfect. I really applaud the chef for bringing such specific Asian cuisine to this remote location and doing it so well. Previous visit: Surprisingly nice ambience and great food. Noodle salad with an imaginative garnish of pickled rhubarb that was surprisingly delicious, and adorned with a few edible flowers. Not what I was expecting in Juneau - very impressed. Pad Thai, however, was lackluster, without the classic bitter tamarind flavor, and with skinny, ordinary, spaghetti noodles. But still better than average."
"We stopped in to try some local beers and food. At Red spruce we ordered the salmon burger(delicious!) And Farmer's market salad with prawns(also delicious with fresh ingredients, tasted of summer). Both dishes were flavorful, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Topped off the meal with a devils club shake. Never had devils club in any shape or form before and wanted to try it. Mostly tasted like vanilla ice cream with a hint of herbal flavor. Still very good. Very nice establishment with nice views and lots of outside seating options as well with firepits to keep you warm."
