Reviews of Tier 1 Veterinary Medical Center
"We brought our dog in for a routine check and to ask about getting his teeth cleaned. He was a rescue and they let us know he would probably need one. We got told his teeth were is great condition from what they could tell. That they weren't wiggling and that it should be a minimum cleaning. I got an estimate that said $1200-$3000. They said $3000 to pull all of his teeth. We saved up $4000 just in case and had it in our mind that if all his teeth had to be pulled We may just put him down due to how severe and his age. We scheduled an overnight appointment and then called the day of asking on how the deposit works. They said it was half of the high amount and the high amount was $4400. My husband and I were shocked and began to freak out. We explained what our estimate said. They said 3 days after the initial exam things were added and we weren't told. We still dropped him off and asked for a call if it was over the basic cleaning. turned our phones us anxiously and headed home. Around 4am we were happy as we had not received a call and had a wave of relief. Around 7am we got a call that Walter was just now going under and all his teeth had to be pulled and it was going to be $5500. We asked them to wake him up or do what they can for a smaller amount and we would have to break it up. We essentially got shamed for not wanting to drop $5500 on our dogs teeth. We were made to feel like we were bad pet owners and the tone was VERY condescending. They told us they pulled all but 3 teeth and to come get him at 10am. For an hours worth of work they wanted $5500. I pick up my dog who is bleeding shaking and scared from being away from us all night and told he should be fine later. What trauma to get your dog home. Blood coming out of his mouth. Crying from being pain and not being fed for 24 hours. Had it been done overnight he probably would have felt better and not had these issues. Then in the follow up we are told he may have this weird heart thing and that we need to get checked every 6 months but they did no tests or anything so the dog could die anyways. For an emergency they will do in a pinch but a normal vet is just a joke. We are going to show the xrays they took to other vets and get a second opinion on if all his teeth needed to come out. Not that it matter now. Edit only to response: 1) I don't use my name as you so posted in things. It is very unprofessional to post my legal name on here as it was different from my name on this. 2)never mentioned I paid $5500. I said that we asked to do as much as we can for a smaller amount and we would do the rest later. Whether or not a discount was given we were made to feel like bad pet owners. We did not ask for a discount. We asked for the dog to get woken up or for you to do as much as you could and we could come back a different time **as stated above** 3) you say no additional tests were authorized but we also were not asked if we wanted him tested. If the heart murmur (which was actually called something different by the vet) which was an infection of the heart. Wouldn't it be important to test the dog to make sure he in fact did not have an infection of the heart rather than scare the owners into thinking there is bigger issues with the dog?"
"My Russian Blue cat, Grimm, rapidly developed a very severe liver and kidney infection. Unfortunately, by the time we realized the existence & severity of the condition, it was too late. When we took Grimm to Tier 1, we were given the prognosis and the odds were very low that she would make a recovery. We loved her very much and did not want to drag out a process that wouldn’t likely succeed. So, we chose euthanasia. I have never had to go through the process before. Tier 1 vets explained the process, gave us a breakdown of costs, and allowed us to sit in the room with Grimm as long as we wanted in order to say our goodbyes. We never felt rushed, which was appreciated. We chose to stay with her during the process, which was painless. I’m glad we chose this option. She went out happy and pain free wrapped in a blanket in our arms, which was best. We miss her but are glad that she did not suffer. We chose to bury her under a tree with a good view on our property. The night we buried her, the Northern Lights came out for just 10 minutes. I like to think that was Grimm saying goodbye. We miss you, Grimm. ~Thank you to the whole team at Tier 1 who signed a sympathy card. That was very thoughtful."
"Over 2 years ago my dog was diagnosed keto acidosis and diabetes type one . Tier 1 wanted to kill my dog and said he wouldn’t last 3 days. We took him home to pass away with us. Well … he still here and living a great life. Over the past two years tier one has wanted to do expensive medical procedures, and testing. Unless you are a very rich person, these are all very expensive test and procedures. Tier 1 has charged us 30% higher in any other pharmacy for his insulin and refused to refill his prescription without having us bring him in every six months and arguing with us about getting more test. I personally believe that the policies of tier 1 are to get as much money from the pet owner as possible with total disregard to the pet owners request or concerns tier 1 is extremely over priced. You will never have the same doctor and their vet techs talk to the owners of the animals like we’re children. If your pet needs an emergency procedure and you can make the drive to Anchorage please if you love your pet, take your pet to Anchorage or wait until a week day when a different vet clinic is open. Tier 1 has killed, mother dogs, and their puppies on simple procedures and completely and totally over priced medication‘s and procedures and test. I will never recommend tier one to anyone who loves their animals . I believe the owners of tier 1 should be ashamed of themselves for allowing tier 1 to have the policies that they have."
"We had an emergency with a very small dog that was bit by a much larger dog. We came in on a Saturday with a dog whose eye was in serious need of medical attention and the staff was very professional and helpful. They had us sorted out and the issue fixed within a couple hours. The price was about what you would expect but the staff was more concerned with helping than they were with anything else. Overall it was one of the better emergency veterinary services I have ever experienced. Would definitely recommend them if you are looking for an emergency veterinarian."
"We consistently have positive interactions and results from Tier 1 for both our dog (Kiska) and our cat (Trip). And are very grateful for the services they’ve provided and the help we’ve needed over the years. When we decided to change our veterinary provider in 2021, we went to Tier 1. We enrolled our puppy, Kiska, in their puppy package, and have since made regularly scheduled appointments, annual exams and vaccines, bloodwork, spay/neuter, teeth cleaning, surgeries and walk-in appointments. We live in Anchorage, and drive out for Tier 1 because it's reputable, trustworthy and knowledgeable. When we make an appointment, we schedule in advance and go in with the respect and understanding that if there’s an emergent case that should take priority, we wait our turn. I would say that only once out of many scheduled appointments, I had to wait an hour past the expected appointment time. It was explained to me that a dog needed emergency surgery and we understood. There’s a huge difference between waiting longer for a check-up (Which we were) and waiting for emergency surgery. And we appreciate that they allow those that need care most to go first. Kiska loves their park, and we went out and used it while waiting. We have frequently also used their walk-in services. Each time, we left feeling that it was worth the wait and that we were grateful to have what we needed to care for our pets. The longest walk-in wait time was 3 hours, and the other times were under 90 minutes. I feel that this is an excellent wait time because we didn’t have a scheduled appointment. When we adopted a 5 year old cat, Trip, in 2023, we were fortunate that he was previously cared for at Tier 1 and they were about to update his medical records. Through the adoption agency they had him current with his vaccinations. At his first checkup appointment, they noticed that Trip had tartar on his teeth that needed to be cleaned. We made the appointment on their recommendation and his teeth are so much healthier. Trip was a cat that had his original owner pass on and then struggled to find a home. He’d been repeatedly fostered and surrendered, and been available for adoption for a long time. At the drop off for his dental appointment, he became very scared and urinated on himself. The staff were so kind and understanding. They bathed him, took care of him, and told us what a good boy he was while he went through his appointment. We will continue to use Tier 1 and can only say positive things about them and highly recommend them. Thank you for all that you do for Kiska and Trip. Amanda & Ryan Murphy"
