Reviews of Harman House Apartments
"Management is horrible and will try to nickel and dime you out of every dollar you own; I'm pretty sure the only reason there aren't more reviews on here is because they have a part in their contract threatening to kick you out if you write bad reviews. They tried to charge us more for the deposit than what was written in our contract, and when we pointed that out they "nullified" our contract and sent us a new one AFTER it had been signed with the higher amount they wanted to charge. I'm pretty sure that's not even legal, but at the time we were so desperate for housing we just had to bite our tongues and take the hit. If you're looking for housing, Harman should be your very last option."
"Great location, bad landlord"
"I lived here for 6 months, and the fact that they offer a 6 month lease option is pretty much they only good thing about renting with Harman. They advertise a cheap rent, but it does not include a sizeable utilities fee, as well as multiple other fees that come regularly, like parking, cleaning or snow removal. All these fees must be paid online via credit card, for which they charge a processing fee. Despite collecting all these fees, the apartments are not well maintained, and they parking lot is often full. The washing machines in the basement are perpetually broken, and if you ask for a refund for money you put into a broken washer, they will tell you to fill out and submit a maintenance request form, which will result in absolutely nothing happening. The aforementioned utilities fee also does not include electricity, and the tenant is responsible for getting their own contract with the City of Provo. This would be fine, except all the appliances the apartment, including the fridge, stove, and HVAC unit, are all electric. So I'm not sure why the utility fee is so big, since most people don't use $70 of water every month. The apartments themselves are relatively new, but are absolutely tiny and are very cheaply furnished. The walls are thin and useless at muffling noise from neighboring apartments. The refrigerator is barely larger than a hotel minifridge, and the heater/cooler unit is a pathetic, wheezing little thing that doesn't really work. If you ask them to look at the HVAC unit to make sure it is working, they'll just tell you to replace the filter for the fourth time, and it'll totally fix it. Even after ending your leasing contract with Harman, don't expect to get off easy. They'll take a couple hundred bucks out of your security deposit, no matter how spotless you leave the apartment. They'll cite some b.s. reason, like you forgetting to replace a lightbulb or a smoke detector battery, and you can expect any objections to this absurdity to fall on deaf or uncaring ears. This all makes sense if you do any research on Harman Property Management. Their main company website is targeted towards property owners, encouraging owners to hire Harman to manage their rental properties. When you visit Harman's office in Orem, you see stacks of flyers, all with the same pitch. So basically, if you happen to be a wealthy property owner and you're tired of running your own slums and gouging your own tenants, Harman Property Management is the right company for you. On the other hand, if you are a renter looking for a decent apartment, you will find Harman to be a shining example of the exploitation that is so rampant in the Provo housing market."
