"Delayed 2nd update: My appointment was good. Savannah appeared to be knowledgeable and cautious to not damage my hair. It was relaxing however I wanted more blonde in my hair and when I recommended more blonde I felt I wasn't heard due to the caution which is fine because she is the expert and I respect her knowledge and I understand of playing it safe. Despite my hair not turning out how I wanted it, my hair did turnout beautifully and Savannah did a great job. I most likely will not return to this salon and continue my search of finding a salon that listens to me and knows their absolute limit with their experience to provide me what I want. 1st update: Changed rating from 1 star to 2 stars due to Savannah's genuine kind personality however can improve on customer service due to invalidating frustration with brushing through the issue which appeared to be with minimal concern of a brief sorry and explanation or excuses of why I waited 50 minutes for a 25 minute consultation. If a client is expected to show up on time to a scheduled appointment, I expect the professional to show up and be prepared on time as well to ensure the client feels their time is just as important. In that moment, I was upset due to feeling my time was not taken into consideration and expressed my concern to stylist in a respectful manner and appreciated Savannah's effort of not acting out in defensiveness. At this point, my first impressions of Alter Ego is not great however I do believe in not judging a book by its cover and I will be updating my rating through out my experience to provide a more accurate experience for future clients. I do appreciate the work they provide to the community of people of color and hope my personal experience will live up to their reputation. My next appointment will be on the 15th, hopefully my Alter Ego experience will be better than the initial appointment due to personally wanting to give this salon 5 stars. Lets see if they earn it. Please do not provide apology, explanation, excuses etc. via electronically. I prefer in person contact and sincere "sorrys" to be demonstrated through action versus via word. Thank you. Initial Review: Rated 1 star I had an appointment at 6PM and I am currently waiting for Savannah for a hair consultation. It is now 6:50. I'll update review depending how she resolves the issue. Is this common at this salon?"
"I absolutely love this salon... I've been bouncing around from a few different stylists in the valley until my sister-in-law recommended Alter Ego. Tim is fantastic, and he does a ton of red carpet Hollywood styles. I personally go to Savannah, because she does a fantastic job with my cut and color. The prices aren't bad for the quality you get."
"I have been going to Alter Ego Salon for 7 years, the first five I was with Tim Muir but then he suddenly got “too busy” to book me and told me to just go with his assistant Tasia McGee. Please let me remind you, I was a VERY loyal customer to Tim and had actually sent a couple of friends his way because I thought he was so great and the only person in Utah who knew anything about ethnic hair. On their old website it said that Tasia was about half the price to put a weave then Tim was because she had JUST gotten her license and had almost no experience compared to Tim. But I was loyal and still went in to see Tasia, she charged me FULL price, the same as Tim’s, just because and she took more than double the time it would normally take. Not once did I ever go in without him bashing on his clients and talk about how he was going to not schedule them or refuse certain services because they looked at him the wrong way or “gave him the attitude”, when one assistant wasn’t in for the day he would talk very negatively about the absent assistant with the present assistant and all the clients in the salon. Which looking back now, I can only image what lies or stories he was telling others behind my back, he always has something negative to say about any and everyone and goes on tangents of stories and lies. My sister went to him for about 3 years, until once he made her wait for 2 hours and then once she got into his seat refused to even wash her hair (which is included in all his fees) and quickly tightened her weave and made her leave. After this experience she came home and cried, needless to say she NEVER went back. After the pleading of all my family members to not go back and waste more money on him, I STILL chose to be loyal to Tim and his salon and kept going back. All of a sudden he convinced me to buy a different weave then I had been buying for years for a different texture and style, this weave was CHEAP, TANGLED EASILY, AND SHEDDED. He completely ripped me off. I ended up leaving Utah for a year and when I came back, obviously Tim did not have any time to schedule me so he sent me Tasia McGee’s way. She refused to help me know what weave I usually order with Tim (Hair that I ordered for 4 years and she had no idea or willing to help?) I ended up buying hair that they had on filed that I normally bought. I’ve had it in for three months, and he charged me a bucket load and it is horrible hair! HE HAS SCAMMED ME TWICE NOW ON HAIR AND PROBABLY IS BUYING ON CHINESE WEBSITES THAT AREN’T AUTHENTIC AND FOR $20 AND THEN CHARGING ME $500+ FOR THREE BUDNLES FOR AWFUL HAIR! I’ve ended up just taking it out because it was so bad and shed everywhere, $500+ out and I had to take it out anywhere. She then continued to text me back and forth on what she could do, rescheduled me multiple times, and constantly had an attitude. I scheduled a time to come in to tell her the color I wanted her to dye my hair so she could dye it before my appointment. She said that’s great and she’ll have it done, the day before my appointment she tells me she did not have time to dye my hair and that she’ll have to dye it after she puts the weave into my head. I had never heard of this and was nervous it could dye my natural hair. I explained my concerns and even texted Tim (NO RESPONSE, BIG SURPRISE) and quickly Tasia refused to do it and said I had offended her. After Tasia proceeded to cancel my appointment less than 12 hours to the appointment. I quickly found someone who could put it in the next day, and she has been fabulous since! Tasia has left Tim’s studio to start her own career, I believe her salon is called Hair by Tasia, or something to that effect. I warn everyone who is considering following her or even giving her a try, DO NOT! He isn’t the only person in Utah who knows how to ethnic hair and I promise if you do your research you will find someone better, kinder, and who actually has MORALS AND DOESN’T TALK BEHIND CLIENTS OR ASSISTANTS BACKS!"
"I went in for a silk press. For someone with 4b texture hair my stylist (Tasia) did not do a very good job. Prior to getting started I was told "your hair will not be completely flat since it's natural". I've had better care and better results from other stylists in other cities. This was my first time giving a Salt Lake City stylist a try with my natural hair and it was pretty disappointing."
"Every time I walk out of this place I feel like a celebrity! All the staff are very knowledgeable about ALL hair types and they are fun. My hair is very course and curly, yet no matter what style I ask for from any of the stylists they execute it beautifully. One thing I love is during each appointment the stylists will teach me what products to use and how to maintaine the style so when i'm rocking my natural curls or a silky straight silk press I can go home and recreate it without damaging my hair. This is a by appointment only salon so you will have to book in advance also they do offer standing appointments so you can book out 6 months or more which is great!"
