About the Bonneville Salt Flats
The Bonneville Salt Flats, located in Greenhaven, Utah, United States, are one of Earth's most unique landforms. This 30,000 acre expanse of hard, white salt crust on the western edge of the Great Salt Lake Basin is a Special Recreation Management Area managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The salt flats are open to the public for recreational purposes, including land speed racing, archery competitions, running races, photography, videography, and scientific research projects. Access is via a paved road, but caution is advised due to the potential hazards of driving on the salt flats when wet or flooded. The iconic landscape has served as the racing grounds for generations of land speed racers since 1914. Efforts are being made to replenish the salt flats through the Salt Laydown Project to preserve this historic site. The Bonneville Salt Flats are a National Register of Historic Landmarks and are a must-visit destination for those seeking a truly unique experience in Utah.
Reviews of Bonneville Salt Flats
"Interesting place to stop if you are passing through. Unless there is a special event I wouldn't go out of my way. Avoid the gas station that is close by (left a seperate review for that). Was early June when we stopped. Easy to get in/out."
"Came here in September and the day was beautiful definitely a drive away from the city but worth it. It had rained the day prior so we had some water which made for great pictures. Cars were out but further in, there was plenty of parking since we went later in the afternoon"
"If you are visiting Utah, this place is a must see. The super flatland covered in white salt for as far as the eye can see with mountain scenery in the distant horizon. Technically, there is no speed limit so you can drive as fast as you want however, be careful as the salt can really get underneath your car. Sometimes the area is closed due to heavy rain. However, if you find yourself going on a day with dry weather and clear skies, make sure you stay to watch the Milky Way night sky. The entrance to the salt flats is sort of unofficial just go through the resting area, westward, and then go off the curb."
"Usually, the Bonneville salt flats is just a pit stop for different trips. However, there's lots of water there right now which are wonderful for reflection photos. We went for sunset and it was beautiful. If you park at the rest stop, you can walk out into the water. The salt formations are beautiful and the water went up to my shins."
"The best rest stop ever!!!... inspires other world imaginings. The winter snow has melted into crystal clear water, mirroring the surrounding mountains. Avoid driving over the flats as the saltwater is corrosive and you can easily get stuck in the muddy salt crust."
