Reviews of Jin's kungfu martial arts
"Sifu Phan offers affordable classes and flexible schedules. (Sifu is a word that means both a teacher and father figure, which I think is lovely!) He is strict, yet loving and supportive. He thoughtfully guides children based on their specific behaviors, while ensuring the class moves forward with learning objectives. My daughter started with him at age 7 and is now 9. She goes four days per week and has earned a purple belt, but needs to work much harder for blue. Sifu gives belt tests only to the worthy and awards the belt only when the student successfully meets all predetermined requirements. He does not charge for re-tests, nor does he give "participation trophies"; meaning, the student must work hard and earn it. Working on goals is just one life-prep lesson that he offers. Sifu talks about physical bullying and for the kids to use other tactics like words or walking away BEFORE considering using their martial arts skills. This is self-defense and discipline, not fighting. On Saturday, he spoke to the children about listening and responding the first time without requiring Sifu, parents, or teachers to ask repeatedly or raise their voices. He nearly received a standing ovation from the parents for that one! I also adore that Sifu speaks of kindness and respect, reminding older or more advanced students about the importance of mentorship. For example, during an exercise, you might see him pair a more self-focused child who knows the techniques (mine...sigh) with a child who is newer or struggling. It's a beautiful learning opportunity for both of them! It's like a family at Jin's, not an overly commercial franchise, which we've tried. Sifu Phan usually offers two free classes. His program is popular, so he might have a waiting list. To keep costs down for us, he doesn't have a staff (brown- or black-belt student teachers sometimes and an accountant for financials). Other than that, it's he who does the training, which is remarkable as that he is exceptionally reliable and responsive."
"My son and I have been taking classes with Sifu Phan and we really enjoy our time there. He has developed a well rounded system and teaches a few different styles that are fun and effective. I like watching my 8 year old son grow and develop life skills such as respect, discipline and focus from his classes."
"Our son basically grew up in Jins studio. You won't find a better mentor (or person!) than Mike. The atmosphere is welcoming and the students are accepting and encouraging of one another. Equal amounts of attention are given to the study and application of Martial Arts as is the history and meaning behind it all. Anyone who enters this studio will leave as a better version of themselves. Couldn't recommend enough!"
"Mike is an incredible Kung Fu instructor and overall amazing human being! After 10 years of training, our daughter earned her black belt. It has been a great journey of learning and growth for her. Mike has inspired her and so many others to find greater willpower and drive to keep fighting through life."
