Reviews of College of Architecture & Planning
"I'm a grad student at the U of U's Arch program and I highly recommend NOT attending the University of Utah's College of Architecture and Planning program. Specifically their graduate program, It is a complete mess and the only consistent thing about the college is that it is consistently inconsistent. Due to their lack of organization professors have repeated several classes. Also, professors are constantly quitting or getting fired. They are very unsure on what to teach and very little of what they have taught is applicable to the real world. They pride themselves on their Design Build programs for their grad students but their programs are in complete shambles. Design Build Salt Lake has completely tanked and no longer exists. Design Build Bluff exists but is unorganized. For all their grad students who enrolled for Design Build Salt Lake, they have them designing and fabricating small lights, chairs, and an outhouse for Design Build Bluff. Prior to applying to their Graduate program, they had lied to the students about Design Build Salt Lake, stating that they would be building an ADU for the homeless only for them to discover 2/3 of the way through their first semester of grad school that Design Build Salt Lake no longer existed. Leadership knew Design Build Salt Lake would no longer exist long ago yet they lied to them all in hopes that they would apply to their program. There has also been overwhelming evidence of fraud and mishandling of funds, and once they overcharged us for a semester and we complained about it they quickly edit the total course credit hours for the semester from 14 to 16 credit hours.... We only took 3 classes. It wasn't even 12 credit hours. Constant lies and manipulation. They are greedy and try to cram as many students into the building as possible. Now due to the lack of room, the second-year undergrad students have to attend class via zoom and their studio is located off campus in a random building in downtown Salt Lake and there have been numerous safety concerns and complaints raised by the students and as always, they are ignored. There is little to no resources for the students and there are almost zero scholarships or grants available for their arch students. If you’re an international student looking at going to the U of U DON’T! Their program does have highly educated knowledgeable professors but unfortunately those in leadership positions are unorganized, greedy and have corrupted the program."
"I had a bad experience with the design program here. I worked for a year and a half trying to get into their program and peying the extra fees that come with being a part of the classes. Grades in the classes are dependent upon how much the instructors like your work and the instructors tend to help people that they like more. They tend to like people who are more talented to begin with. There is definitely a culture of favoritism and criticism. Dont expect to get to know your instructors very well and dont expect them to care about what is going on in your life. Both of my grandfathers died in the semester that I applied for the major so I had to pull a few allnighters in order to keep up with the workflow. They dont care if you wark all day and all night doing their assignments and dont want you to tell them if you do. Their culture lacks empathy towards their students. The program also lacks positivity. There is so much competition to get into their programs that they dont have to be tactful about their crticism and are trying to weed people out. Dont expect constructive criticism. Expect emotional abuse. They will criticise your work and call it "killing your darlings". If you're humble enough to change your work based upon their crticism they may still not like it and give you a bad grade anyways. The program wants more people trying to apply for the major because they get extra money from every student who joins a prerequisite class. Look forward to spending $200+ in class fees. Most students in the program are so worried about their standing in the program that they will rarely express their concerns to administrators. They think that expressing concerns will make them look bad and that the teachers wont like them. Students fear rejection from the program if they voice their opinions. That brings another layer to the table, a lack of transparency and communication. If you do decide to give the program a shot, talk to Cord Bowen or Holly Johnson. They were the most supportive to me, and pehaps they will be to you as well. I dont want anyone else to go through what I went through, so if you want a more supportive design program with a more constructive culture that doesnt want to just "tear you apart", perhaps you should look elsewhere. Weber State and Utah State have compareable programs."
"Loved it, such a nice place"
"The building was built in the 70's and built during a time when only men used it. Bathrooms for ladies are scarce though some have been retrofit. The building inside and out, looks like it hasn't been touched since it was constructed. The bathrooms also have a very ... interesting smell, whether they've been cleaned recently or not. Depending on the time of year you visit, you may see some of the student projects that have been worked on, which is one of the only main attractions I would say of the building. Students usually have a mid review - in the middle of the semester - and a final review. That's the best time to come see projects. These dates usually land somewhere in October and March for mid reviews and December and May for Final reviews."
