About the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park Museum
Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park Museum is located at 2921 Scouts Rest Ranch Road in North Platte, Nebraska. This museum showcases the life and career of the famous showman, scout, and buffalo hunter, William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The park became a state historical park in 1965 and has since restored the house and barn, acquiring a wealth of Cody memorabilia for display.
Visitors can explore the mansion on self-guided tours from late spring to early fall, while the park grounds are open year-round from 8 a.m. to sunset. Buffalo Bill Cody was born in Iowa in 1846 and went on to become a Pony Express rider, Army scout, and founder of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The mansion, known as "The Mansion on the Prairie," was his home from 1886 to 1913.
In addition to the mansion, the park features a large barn and several outbuildings filled with artifacts from Cody's performing days and ranch life. Visitors can also enjoy fishing, guided trail rides, and rental of kayaks, canoes, tubes, and tanks at the adjacent Buffalo Bill State Recreation Area. The park is also available for rentals, including weddings and other activities.
A park entry permit is required for visiting the state park and can be purchased on-site or online in advance. Nearby attractions include Lake Maloney State Recreation Area, Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area, and the Golden Spike Tower in North Platte. North Platte offers dining, shopping, and the Lincoln County Historical Museum, where visitors can learn about the North Platte Canteen.
The Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park Museum is part of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, which hosts a variety of events throughout the year for outdoor enthusiasts. For more information, contact the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission at 402-471-0641.

Reviews of Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park Museum
"I came here in the Fall. The grounds are absolutely stunning, a true testament to the unknown beauty of Nebraska. There was also some local event or fair happening when we were here, it looked fun, but we just hung out on the periphery. The grounds are quiet and dog friendly, perfect for a calm private walk with loved ones. If I'm in the state again, I'll be back!"
"Wonderful stop to take in some beautiful sights and history. Very well preserved and clean. The lady at the desk was not very happy but still a very wonderful place. Peaceful walking around the grounds and the old house is just breathtaking."
"What a great treasure! The interpretive displays are so well done! The house is just like walking back in time. The barn really puts in perspective how much he cared for his horses. The treasures are photos of all his performers and performances plus his commitment to our country."
"Definitely worth the price of admission, but I could do without the $12 non-resident state parks fee just to park in the parking lot. What is it with the Midwest, Great Plains states that offering retired military discounts (restaurants, admission, etc.) is a mortal sin? The Buffalo Bill Ranch Museum was very interesting and informative. Did you know ice blocks could be preserved for up to a year in a well-built ice house? Is the Kit Carson restaurant in Chehalis, WA, named after William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s son who died of scarlet fever?"
"We stopped by around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday 9/20/22 it was eerie because we (my dad and I) were the only ones there. Sad no one with the parks service was on staff. The house and barn were locked up. We were hoping there was an admission fee and we could get a brochure or/& a map of the grounds. Worth a stop, but IDK if the required permit is necessary - especially since there was not much explanating the homestead. There are printed notes displayed on each window (with drapes pulled closed) describing what was on the other side... like "Buffalo Bill's room" or "women's parlor". On the other hand the gentleman caretaker at the park (about 5 minutes drive away) with the trains was/is EXTREMELY knowledgeable, friendly and informative. He even suggested some other things to check out."
