About the Deadwood History, Inc.
Deadwood History, Inc. is a fascinating institution located at 150 Sherman Street in Deadwood, South Dakota. Founded in 1930 by pioneer businessman W.E. Adams, the Adams Museum was established to preserve and showcase the rich history of the Black Hills. The museum building was generously donated to the City of Deadwood and has since become a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts.
One of the unique experiences offered by Deadwood History, Inc. is a tour of one of Deadwood's former houses of prostitution. These establishments operated illegally in the city from 1876 until 1980, when a federal raid finally shut them down for good. This immersive tour sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of Deadwood's history.
The institution also hosts the iconic Days of '76 celebration, which began in 1924 to honor Deadwood's first pioneers. This annual event features a historic parade and an award-winning PRCA rodeo, paying tribute to the prospectors, miners, muleskinners, and madams who played a vital role in shaping the history of the Black Hills.
Visitors can also explore the beautifully preserved Queen Anne-style home built in 1892, known for its exquisite oak interiors, hand-painted canvas wall coverings, stained-glass windows, and original furnishings. The house boasts modern amenities such as 19th-century plumbing, electricity, and telephone service, offering a glimpse into life in the late 1800s.
Additionally, the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC) houses one of the nation's largest collections of Black Hills archival materials dating back to the 1870s. This center serves as a valuable resource for researchers, historians, and anyone interested in delving deeper into the history of the region. Don't miss the chance to explore the fascinating exhibits and collections at Deadwood History, Inc. for an unforgettable journey through time.

Reviews of Deadwood History, Inc.
"We did the Paranormal Investigations of the Adams House. This was our second year doing it. First year was full of activty. This year their was activty. just not as much. Did a blinded ghost box session and the spirit was a character. His answers had us all laughing. The spirtits at the Adams house are peaceful and freindly. Definity will do this again next year with the fam."
"Excellent tour guide with abundant brothel and Deadwood history information! Ready and able to answer all questions! The authentically restored rooms give insight into the 'workings' of the brothel. Lots of history to absorb in an hour; plan to read some of the clippings on the walls when you finish the tour."
"This was an excellent tour and gave us a lot of history about the wild times in Deadwood. The brothel was nicely renovated and we enjoyed all the photos and newspaper clippings on the walls. We have done other brothel tours and this one is by far the best. Highly recommended!"
"The staff at all the excellent museums are extremely cordial and helpful, and the archives is rich in material on Deadwood history. I highly recommend visits to all their museums."
"Great place. The days of 76 museum is quite innovative. The large number of wagons are used to tell the story of people, making what could be a very esoteric museum on the history of a single object (or lifestyle) into a fascinating analysis of "progress""
