Reviews of Aveda Institute New Mexico
"I graduated from Aveda’s Esthiology program on January 2024 and it was a great experience. All my instructors were amazing, Emily, Alexandria, and Wes. They’re some of the nicest, down to Earth people I’ve ever met. They all truly care about their students success and learning experience. They were all so friendly and made sure we knew we could come to them with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. Aveda was very organized compared to other schools I toured and helped us so much with State Board prep. This was a very positive experience for me and highly recommend looking into Aveda if you’re interested in becoming an Esthetician."
"Disappointing experience despite the Aveda brand-name. The school could be great, however, it is sloppily run and allows Instructors to verbally and emotionally abuse students with impunity. I was excited to start my second career as an aesthetician, but my four months at Aveda were unhappy and discouraging. The facility itself is a nightmare for anyone with allergies. The carpeting is old and not properly cleaned, and the “fans” were cheap and filled with dust. None of the classrooms had any ventilation, and many of us were sniffling, coughing, and lethargic from allergic reactions all day every day. Our first instructor was very nice. The “Phase 2” Instructor - Alexandria Barela - was a lazy, petty and abusive nightmare. She told us that she thought she was a military commander, and would treat us as such - which is pretty funny for a beauty school. When Alexandria was not barking orders or sending frenetic messages through groupchat she could usually be found outside talking on her phone. Rather than teaching us anything interesting, Alexandria rushed thru the basic curriculum and often left us sitting ALL DAY in closed rooms doing NOTHING or watching irrelevant videos. This is not a teaching style I had experienced before, but I went along with it for awhile. One afternoon, “Miss Alexandria” chose to chew me out out in front of all my classmates citing vague accusations of “not following protocol.” My prior education was a bachelors degree from a liberal arts university and while I knew beauty school would be a bit different, this behavior was a bridge too far. I did not react to her outburst, yet Alexandria chose to follow me and attempt to physically block me from “clocking out” and leaving the building while berating me with insults. I have zero tolerance for bullies, and I don’t spend money at businesses that treat their clients (aka students) like garbage. Like so many businesses in Albuquerque, Aveda simply does not understand that whomever is paying the bill is the customer and should be treated as such. This is not the military, or prison, and they should not employ staff at the leadership level who cannot grasp these basic concepts. I’d also mention that “leadership” did not discipline Alexandria or apologize to me, they simply skirted the issue and let me take a leave of absence. Anyway, this school has some good points and is fine for someone who does not have allergies or mind paying $10k+ to be treated poorly. However, if you’re on the fence or have other career options… maybe flip a coin ;)."
"Angelica did my hair. She was professional and she did an amazing job!! I love it! Cut and color, making me look 10 years younger. Already so many compliments. My only complaint is you can't tip when using a credit card."
"Today 11-18-2023 I walk into Aveda institute I brought my daughter here before however today as I walk in there two females sitting up front behind a desk. There was no greeting or I was ask if I needed help. I told them if I could head to the back to see my daughter who was getting her hair down by Shaylene Johnson. They didn’t say a word. I felt not welcome or treated like a customer. I believe in customer service in any job and professionalism greeting people . I felt that these two females were unhappy or just having a bad early morning. Other than that I am very pleased with the people in the back they were very nice. Please look into this because welcoming people making them feel comfortable make people come back and feel welcome. Shaylene is doing a great job. Thank u"
