"I swung by to buy a few shooters. When I walked in, the guy behind the counter was on the phone. He didn't even silently greet me with a smile. When I was checking out, I asked him how he was doing today and he gave a noncommittal shrug and continued listening on the phone. I told him nevermind, I would go somewhere that treats me like I'm a customer making a purchase. His response was the ONLY time he said something to me. A snotty smile and "Okay!" I've worked customer service for well over a decade. I understand how rough it can be. I also understand from hundreds of experiences that it is completely possible to provide good service to two people at once, especially when one is on the phone. It's all about smiling, eye contact, and maybe a mouthed "sorry" about the phone. When that happens, I smile and nod in silence, with the understanding that they are having to multi-task. This is the closest store to my new job. It WAS going to be my new usual and I WAS going to be spending a lot of money there. Not now."
