"My family Recently built a home through Housing Resources Self Help Building Program and it was by far the worst experience of my life! Going into this program the staff here make it seem like you help build the home with lots of supervision and guidance and this was not the case! You are pretty much out there struggling the whole time alone. Also, they DO NOT mention that you should have a savings of 10,000$ to cover any out of pocket expenses. You are responsible for paying for things out of pocket and being reimbursed which can take up to a month or longer in some cases. During our build we went thro 4 on site supervisors and 1 project manager. Two of these supervisors were fired for substance abuse issues, the project manager was very bias and at one point had a inappropriate relationship with one of the homeowners before quitting, the last supervisor we had which is still employed thro this company is now casually dating one of the home owners. This individual home owner didn’t help build her home and was never punished by not following the rules set by Housing Resources. I’m assuming dating the supervisor had something to do with her getting away with breaking the contract she signed. I was injured on the site and was unable to walk for a long while but still managed to make my hours. We were constantly threatened by Housing Resources that they would take our homes if we were short on hours even just by ten but other ppl were not held accountable. We in fact had to build the homes of others that didn’t put in any effort at all. The staff at Housing Resources are very unprofessional in many ways. They don’t like you to bring issues to their attention and when you do they do not address these issues, instead they treat you as if you are the problem. They speak to ppl and respond to you like your stupid and a bother. The new project manager has no experience in her role and is very childish and unprofessional to say the least. She can’t answer questions about building materials nor does she know the policy and standard of Rural Development. Her answer to a lot of our questions was well, go ahead and buy it and if RD doesn’t reimburse you that’s your answer. It’s her job to know what will pass with them and what will not! These employees need more on the job trainings. They need to enforce boundary trainings, how to handle difficult situations and different personalities, they also need some diversity trainings. An elderly woman who was building with us was treated horribly! Anytime she had a complaint, a question, or concern they were very rude and on numerous occasions wouldn’t even respond to her. Also, if you are thinking about doing this program make sure to watch your financials and project projections they give you because there’s times you will be charged twice or you will be given scraps and charged full price. I wouldn’t recommend this program to my worse enemy!! These homes are project homes and are NOT quality like they say. I wouldn’t have even given them 1 star but had to in order to leave a review. BEWARE!! If your already committed good luck!"
