Reviews of Eating Recovery Center Denver - Spruce St.
"ERC is touted as “the best in the country” and that reputation is a dangerous lie. They do not treat their patients with dignity, compassion, or care. The patients are coerced or threaten to comply, and then punished if they don’t submit. Coercion, threats, and punishment are used even by their psychiatrist! The patients lay on the hard ground in the hallway much of the day—dissociated as they cope with being treated as subhuman. ERC is understaffed and their nurses do not want to be there, talking poorly about the patients in front of them and treating them like an inconvenience. The patients are given substandard sleeping quarters. The patients are not allowed to talk about their eating disorder in group therapy—HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO HEAL AND TRANSFORM?!? The patients are neglected all day while being poked by needles (constant blood tests) and treated worse than animals—because we tend to care for and love our animals. The blinds are closed unless parents are visiting, so the children don’t get to look outside. They cannot go to the bathroom outside of scheduled times, so patients are wetting themselves and throwing up in the hallway. The food is terrible and I believe ERC profits off of that because patients who won’t eat get put on feeding tubes, and this is how they make more money. I toured the place and they lied to me, showed me what they knew I wanted to see. They showed me a fake bedroom with a comfortable bed and pillow, with blinds open to a beautiful view. I cannot imagine anyone finding true health and healing in this place. They really need to shut down—THIS CANNOT BE THE BEST WE CAN DO FOR OUR CHILDREN WHO ARE SUFFERING. The only reason I could see any parent considering ERC for their child is for medication management and feeding tubes, but even then I would NEVER send any child here."
"As I have seen many times in these comments ERC only cares about the profit. They don't acknowledge you as an actual human being with a mental illness. They don't train their staff well, I can't even count the amount of times the ERC staff said triggering things or just completely disregarded our feelings. I have gotten diagnosed with PTSD from this center. As I understand rules here need to be strict but they don't need to threaten you and have all the doctors hold you down as they shove a NG tube shoved down your throat. You could hear the screams from across the hall of these poor children. Please read the Denver Post article on this place because it perfectly describes how things went there. I didn't go outside for a month. Please don't send your children here."
"My father committed suicide just days after I arrived here and I was treated atrociously as a minor patient. Right after being told my father was dead I was forced into an isolation room and my phone calls with my living family were taken away. My so-called “therapist” (I think her name was Kaylee or another name stating with K I have blocked it out) told me that my grief over the death of my father just days before was bringing down the whole facility and when I cried I would be physically restrained by large men and taken to the “quiet room”. My therapist then refused to see me and would walk out if I started to cry. I was held pretty much captive for about 5 months all while being force fed when my eating disorder was bulimia and not anorexia (I still was able to maintain bulimia in the center bc they don’t acknowledge it as a real eating disorder with separate treatments than anorexia). I was gaslit, physically and mentally abused, isolated, and my mother in her time of grief was financially taken advantage of and bullied into keeping me there by this awful place. One of the most dehumanizing and traumatizing experiences of my life. I have PTSD (diagnosed) to this day from ERC I don’t think I can ever fully express how much harm they did to me and my family. I struggle even more now than I did before. DO NOT GO HERE!! DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE!!"
"It has been weighing heavy on my mind for years and I feel ready. ERC is a scam. They are horrible. When I came, my father had told them I had a severe eating disorder, etc. They checked me into the residential program. After several assessments, my therapist (Erika Holmes) and psychiatrist (Nia Sipp) agreed I did not have an eating disorder. Yet, when I became outraged for being hospitalized for one, they sent me on an involuntary mental hold to the Aurora ER. Immediately, the psychiatrist at the Aurora ER who evaluated me, as well as the doctor in charge, ruled the mental hold "fabricated." The mental hold indicated I had low attention to ADLs (activities of daily living) in which even my father, who had placed me there, disagreed. When the hospital become concerned, ERC said I was a "marijuana addict" and they were concerned I would give it to the other patients. They then said I either had to come back into residential, whilst acknowledging I didn't have an ED and thus committing insurance fraud. The hospital tested me for marijuana, my results were negative. But I had nowhere else to go - I couldn't stay in the ER. I was 19, in Colorado. I am from LA and would have been on the streets. I had to go back to Eating Recovery Center. Although I have recently just recovered from the trauma, as a now 28 year old I see the world so different and-- I would NEVER send even my worst enemy here. They committed such fraud, hurt, dishonesty, and control. Nia Sipp told me I was bipolar like my mother (bipolar is not in my family) and prescribed me antipsychotics - specifically, Lamictal and Seroquel to sedate me. When I inquired as to why, they told me if I continued to inquire I would never be let out. This is easily proven by my medical records, although they have attempted to deny it. Do NOT send your children here. If you need any further information, please reach out."
"To whom this may concern, Please, for your own sake or for your child's sake, do not go to this facility. I don't care if you go to Walden, another ERC, CFD, or any other place; you will certainly be better off there. If you look further into the reviews, most (if not all) positive reviews are either coming from a parent or a business partner. I have had nightmares about the dehumanizing nature of this place every day since I left, and I was a compliant patient."
