Reviews of Ascent Classical Academy of Douglas County
"My grade is on our 4th Latin teacher THIS YEAR. This concludes in me taking almost a full year of Latin and knowing absolutely none. I think this is the hint to switch to Spanish. Our current Latin teacher used to teach history and knows absolutely no Latin(she is usually a sub so it's not her fault). I think the lunch time needs to be longer also. The idea of virtue is wonderful but the school executes it poorly. My grade is the disruptive grade and we are always being punished for things that half the time I am unaware happened. If you punish the good kids and the bad kids then the good kids wont have any incentive to be good because they get punished anyway. Is that justice? I think not. The school has detention for a reason so just give the disruptive ones a detention and leave the rest of us alone. Other than all that, most of my teachers know the subject they are teaching and I have learned a lot education wise. Also the front desk ladies are awesome - Ms. Cassie, Ms. Clay, and Ms. Chansilp :)"
"We love this school! It was very scary to switch from public school at 1st. Now we are so thrilled! The teachers are amazing and the education they are getting is like that of a private school. The workload takes an adjustment but once you get that handled, it’s well worth it! We have brought over several families and all feel the same!"
"Transferring from a public school that discouraged religious and diverse political beliefs, and coming to a school that welcomes christian students and people of different backgrounds has really been refreshing! The teachers have personal relationships with each and every student which really makes this school special! The education is classical, which means that the students focus on classical literature and art, and the history classes seem to have no particular political biases. The teachers encourage virtues and insightful discussions among peers that really build moral character. I came back to Ascent for a second year and realized that the school has improved in its physical structure and its education! Although there are many fantastic things I could list, the homework load can be overwhelming, (especially as a junior at Ascent) and the uniform rules can be very strict! I'd recommend coming here before your sophomore year so that you can catch up with the Latin classes and literature! It's a lot of extra work, but the knowledge is extremely handy and the cognitive skills you can attain is significant for everyday life. I believe that there needs to be more limits in regards to the homework load because students have busy lives outside of school. I'd appreciate if there would be more use in technology, especially how that has become more practical in this generation. Other than that, this school is really fantastic and it's a refuge for someone who came out of a very oppressive public school environment."
"We pulled our boys out of the public school they were in and switched to Ascent at the beginning of this school year. My only regret is that we didn't do it sooner. I'm very impressed with the quality of education that my kids are receiving, the curriculum is challenging and the focus is on teaching kids how to think and not what to think. Both of my boys teachers have been outstanding and I'm thrilled that we're part of the Ascent family! I would highly recommend Ascent to anyone who is looking for an alternative to the traditional public school."
"This school is such a blessing! All of my kids are personally, academically and socially thriving at Ascent! This tuition-free charter school is perfect for families looking for a different educational experience than a typical public school provides. Ascent offers detailed, in-depth instruction, encourages discussion and debate in class, educates the students on the importance of personal opinions, and respecting those who think or believe differently than they do. Ascent is more than just a wonderful school environment....the staff does their best to help the students become knowledgeable, respectful, kind citizens, and Ascent encourages the children to follow their dreams/passions/talents and to be more than just a number, or a score on a test. The new building and property are coming along nicely and are being upgraded over time to suit the school's needs more and more. It is not a normal public school building but that is what we like about the environment. The interior is peaceful, welcoming and professional. I must say that the lack of a playground currently (they have plans to install one in the near future) only means the children must use their imagination and/or play with PE equipment (basketballs, etc), which I see as a good thing. Ascent does have basketball hoops, a Gaga Ball pit, and more on the premises! :) In response to someone else's review...My children have varying degrees of sensory issues/ADHD, etc and at Ascent, not only are their needs met by the caring, understanding teachers & staff, but all my childrens' symptoms have decreased since attending Ascent. (Ascent has Special Needs Teachers, as well as, they work with parents whose children have IEPs etc.) Oh! One more thing! I'm so grateful that the children are taught to clean up after themselves and not rely on someone else to do so. The life skills and habits that Ascent teaches the children, overflow into their life outside the school and it is a beautiful thing to see!"
