Reviews of Victory Preparatory Academy
"i went here last school year it sucked. they do nothing about bullying, one girl made my whole grade hate me and all they told this girl to do is apologize and then mr.ceo man made it seem like it was my fault that i was getting bullied and told me that it was a waste of his time. don’t send your kids here unless you want them to get bullied and this is coming from a former student"
"Was hired back in 2017 to teach at VPA as a first year teacher. 7th grade English was my discipline and during the entire process my only concern was creating curriculum for the class as I had never been a teacher before and didn't want to be put in a position like that. Was told, "no problem", that is reserved for a whole different level of educator. Lies..... there was no curriculum for me to inherit as the teacher before me left disgruntled the year before.. Within the first week of training my entire job was creating a curriculum! I tried, did a pretty good job by my state appointed supervisor for first year teachers, but was met by an unwillingness to help and overall negative environment by admin. My department head started to go out of his way to avoid me after numerous times bringing up these issues. I finally walked out before school even started after being ignored again in audacious fashion. I stayed late, I came in early, but this school is run like a prison which is no surprise because the school's founding pillars have their background in corrections. The friends I made before I left all quit by semester too. Best decision I ever made for a job I never really started. Lol they suspended the entire school the same term I bailed on. Phew!!!!!!"
"The school doesn’t care about students being bullied. In fact they just suspend and keep writing up the student whose being bullied. Worst mistake I have ever made was picking this school."
"To qualified teachers with your license who want to teach middle school: Do not work here! I worked in the middle school, and the school expects the students to be completely compliant and silent every minute of every day, and if you know MS, trying to fulfill those expectations is kind of a nightmare. MS teachers walk their class to the next class in straight, completely silent lines. So for MS you have no moment of rest except for the 30 minute lunch and the plan period. Administration communicated several times that they never want to see teachers at their desks during class. And the plan period is usually taken up by VPA’s time intensive behavioral system of writing up students for any minor offense. Creativity and inventive approaches to pedagogy and curriculum are not encouraged here. They value control, not human flourishing. The administration literally sends out “no fun” emails at the end of each quarter to remind teachers not to let kids have any fun in class before breaks and instead have it be “business as usual.” I once saw a substitute teacher not hired back because she had put on a game of charades for students after they finished a test. The school is obsessed with test scores so that they can be recognized by the state officials and get money from grants, but then don’t put the money back into the school. Technology is underutilized at VPA and the school as a whole is many years behind current industry standards. Because of these things, the turn around for the middle school teachers is very high. There is usually one teacher or staff member every month who leaves or is fired. My high school teacher coworkers seemed content, especially since keeping high school students to the strict behavioral standards is far less work so they were able to focus on teaching the curriculum. The pay here is fine if you are not a qualified teacher, though you will work a crazy amount of hours. If you are qualified to teach and have licensure, please look elsewhere. You will regret working at VPA. Pros: -Don’t need licensure to teach here -Students are very well behaved -Very clean and professional work environment Cons: -Lack of positive feedback from administration -Toxic fear-based work environment -Coworkers regularly disappear without a word Additional Information: The school is currently being sued for restricting their students’ free speech because, in 2017, the student body peacefully handed the administration a letter saying they wanted more activities; the entire high school was suspended for that. Then VPA forced a student to leave the school because their parents reported on the situation in their family newspaper. And VPA also cancelled senior graduation this last May. There are several local news stories on these events if you want to read more."
"If I could give this school zero stars I would but since I can only go to 1 that's what's they get. People dont take ur kids to this school they are way to strict and make a huge drama about the dumbest things. The staff never does anything to help out the students. Every single student goes there because they are forced not because they want to because if they weren't forced the school would have 0 students. They may have awards but they have those because they work students to the point where they give up on their education. The administrators are the worst because they're students that are being bullied and all they say is deal with it because they're child problems and I'm not dealing with it. They make the school out to be the best but if people saw how they treat students, how their education is given to them, and how much they suffer everybody would be protesting for the school to be shut down. This school creates so much racism and discriminationabout what languages you can speak and which you can't. So in theory parents don't enroll your students into this school it's the biggest mistake you can make any school is better than vpa."
