Reviews
"Beautiful trail with lots of wildlife. Highly recommend!"
"Fun hike, can get crowded on the first few miles. Parking fills up fast on weekends. Several areas with picnic tables and restrooms on the way up to the dam. Frequent bighorn sheep sightings. Biking is popular."
"This is where the South Platte River comes out of the mountains. Clear water and knarley rock walls. The road, which is closed to cars, used to be part of the rail route to South Park. 6.5 miles of gentle grade, up to Strontia Springs Reservoir, then just a little farther and you hit the Colorado Trail single-track. Half of the time you will see bighorn sheep. Great scenery. When I have out of town visitors I loan them a bike and we go here."
"My husband and I have been there twice. We love the views. Surprisingly they have plenty of picking areas with restrooms that are CLEAN. Unfortunately we had hike there after 10am and the sun doesn’t have mercy."
"Waterton Canyon can be a quiet 6 mile hike up a gently sloping dirt road, or the epic start of the Colorado Trail, which begins near the end of the Canyon, just a few hundred feet from the Strontia Springs Dam. Within the canyon there are a few spaced out resting areas equipped with bathrooms. There are regular visitations of Big Horn Sheep in the area as well. This can be a perfect place for either a nice family outing, or the beginnings of an adventure into the Colorado wilderness! -Chris and Katie"
